The supernatural premise is genuinely clever, but how the fuck they stretched what should have been a 1h50 film into eight episodes is beyond me. It gets increasingly messy and hysterical, with far too much fluff and padding. There’s a good film buried in here somewhere — they just stretched the fuck out of it. The samarra style concept I picked up on at episode 4 and then had to endure 4 more hours of this hysterical shite just to ‘prove myself right’. Maybe if Rachel put the doobie down she would have got to the point quicker. Absolutely padded the arse out of what could of been an and incredibly good film.. Also - taxidermy dogs? Its creepy visuals, bizarre atmosphere, and Camila Morrone’s increasingly anxious performance are easily the strongest parts. The problem is that Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen sometimes confuses being mysterious with actually telling a compelling story. The slow burn works early on, but the middle episodes start stretching the same unease over and over. Eventually I wasn't asking "What is going to happen?" so much as "Are we still doing this?" There are some genuinely unsettling ideas here, and the production looks fantastic. But the mythology gets increasingly messy, while several mysteries feel more intriguing than their eventual answers.
