The Last Ship: Season 1 (2014)

Critic Consensus: Movie-sized action sequences and a pretty cast provide smooth sailing for The Last Ship, though it's not anything that hasn't been seen before.

Tv Season Info

The first series of this post-apocalyptic drama chronicles the events aboard the USS Nathan James, a lone naval ship that must find a way to save humanity from extinction after a fatal virus decimates 80% of the world's population. Commander Tom Chandler (Eric Dane) and his crew are joined on the ship by two virologists, Drs Rachel Scott (Rhona Mitra) and Quincy Tophet (Sam Spruell), who have been tasked with the grave responsibility of collecting samples of the virus and developing a vaccine. After learning that the ship is the only safe haven from the deadly illness, the crew heads to the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in order to collect food and supplies, but they are forced to fight back against escaped al-Qaeda prisoners. The passengers aboard the naval ship must continue to defend themselves from danger when a Russian cruiser attacks the USS Nathan James and attempts to steal the doctors' research that is essential to finding a cure.

Critic Reviews for The Last Ship Season 1

It may be all formula and archetypes, but that's Bay's bread and butter, and the first two hours pack enough oomph to make you want to see what happens when the Ship finally pulls into port.

The Sunday night scene just keeps getting worse on TNT. No, I don't mean the programming. The shows were already good and just got better with the addition of The Last Ship.

You just sit back, swallow this thing whole and wait for sturdy, studly, stolid Captain Chandler to fire off another round of uniformed rhetoric.

The Last Ship sets sail on a strong premise. The question is whether it will be able to stay on course.

Passable summer thriller with some decent (for TV) action sequences.

The Last Ship isn't the kind of series that people will brag about liking, but it could go viral.

Like a bad version of a Tom Clancy novel, The Last Ship falls prey to the worst aspects of producer Bay's films from cardboard caricatures to rampant bellicosity and xenophobia, without any of the flashy filmmaking that can at least make it watchable.

Darn if the thing doesn't have you wanting to tune in next week to see what happens.

The cast is solid - including Adam Baldwin ("Chuck") as Chandler's No. 2 - and if we must contemplate annihilation-by-virus, there are certainly less-pretty places to view it than from the deck of The Last Ship.

The Last Ship is entertaining enough to overlook things that don't quite make sense. Which don't really matter. You have to just sit back and have fun with it, as serious as the situation is.

Audience Reviews for The Last Ship: Season 1

From TNT comes the Michael Bay apocalyptic series The Last Ship. The show follows the crew of the U.S.S. Nathan James as they attempt to find a cure for a deadly virus that has infected 80% of the world's population. Featuring Rhona Mitra, Adam Baldwin, and John Pyper-Ferguson, the casting is pretty good, as are their performances. The writing is also impressive, and does an exceptional job at keeping the show grounded and at giving an authentic depiction of naval life. Additionally, the action is shot especially well, bringing a lot of intensity and suspense to the episodes. Full of exciting adventure, The Last Ship delivers a strong first season.

The Last Ships shows how a good production can still save a rather cliche story. The over the top action was pleasing to the eye for any Bay fans, despite the simple story, the episodes were consistent. The characters were quite well developed, each with their own story. The first season is satisfyingly enjoyable.
