Critics Consensus

Whoopi Goldberg is uncharacteristically absent as master of ceremonies during the 74th Oscars, which nevertheless proves memorable thanks to historic acting wins and a tasteful acknowledgement of national tragedy.

Critic Reviews for The Academy Awards 74th Oscars

All Critics (16) | Top Critics (12)

From utter boredom and dissociation to feel-good, homegrown American melodrama. From the truly sublime to the utterly ridiculous... The duality all night was amazing.

Nathan Lane had the best lines of the evening... Why was his stuff so good and Whoopi's so awful? The schizophrenic gag was one of the all-time Oscar lows.

[Whoopi Goldberg] had a particularly tough job -- bring some fun to this show while the country was recovering from 9/11. Mission not really accomplished.

At 4hr. 21min., this was the longest awards ceremony ever... It was also one of the most entertaining, or at least sit-throughable, Oscar shows in memory.

The show itself was tiresome... Even Whoopi Goldberg seemed fatigued by the show.

The most exciting program I've seen in nearly 40 years of watching the event. Besides the thrill of seeing Halle Berry and Denzel Washington make history as the Best Actress and Best Actor winners, the Best Picture race was a genuine cliffhanger.

Marking a year in which the movie business, like the rest of the world, was in some disarray, last night's Academy Awards returned to the earnest and subdued tones of an earlier era in Hollywood.

No, Russell Crowe didn't win it. Oscar himself could have, though, given some of his more stilted moments in an otherwise fluid telecast.

Poitier's speech alone was almost enough to make the more than four-hour broadcast worth watching.

The 74th Academy Awards ceremony was something special: fresh, crisp, different from its predecessors. Using Donald Sutherland and Glenn Close as backstage announcers: brilliant. Using Whoopi Goldberg as host in a limited capacity: brilliant.

Goldberg was at the top of her hosting game, and the Denzel/Halle/Sidney narrative could not have been more satisfying. Even with a truly subpar Best Picture winner, this ceremony stands as the cream of the crop.
