Critic Reviews for The Academy Awards 75th Oscars

All Critics (21) | Top Critics (13)

Having won nothing -- no pools -- I didn't black out. I lucidly enjoyed the night in the company of friends who are wonderful hosts, not least because they know the difference between wit and low blows when it comes to hooting at the TV screen.

The war didn't seem to be a problem for Steve Martin, who chose not to let it interfere with his jokes. Some of them were bracingly cynical, but most were witless and cruel.

In a smooth and surprisingly tasteful ceremony, the emphasis was on the movies... Martin, hosting for the second time, was smooth and genial, making few acknowledgements of current events.

The most brisk, technically sharp Oscar telecast in years, was highlighted by moving speeches by Brody and especially by Peter O'Toole, a seven-time nominee who was granted an honorary Oscar for a lifetime of great performances.

A downbeat and disconcerting Oscar night, all in all, upstaged by a vast political event to which the movie-making classes were uncertain quite how to react.

Highlights of the evening, besides Martin leading the show successfully, was Meryl Streep's tasteful tribute to Peter O'Toole.

The night presents moments of political opportunity, moments when discord and individual dissent could have resulted in a divided audience, but every one of those moments of opportunity is met with a positivist herd mentality.

The 75th Academy Awards managed to speak to art and to the politics of war. It offered a reminder that movies can entertain and edify, document and invent, curse and forgive.

In all fairness, Martin faced what was probably an impossible task, and he did find his rhythm and improve considerably in the second half, but it was a fairly pathetic showing. Not exactly Letterman poor, but a comedown from two years ago.

The Academy wasn't quite mailing it in, but little would have been lost if the Oscars had been mailed out.

Try as they might last night in the capital of Fantasy Land to create a program that would transport us beyond current events, they never came close.
