The Academy Awards: 82nd Oscars (2010)

SEASON:

82nd Oscars
The Academy Awards

Critics Consensus

Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin share an amiable comedic rapport, but their gentle barbs do little to liven up the placid 82nd Oscars, a ceremony that can't seem to decide whether it wants to be hip for the kids or staid for the old guard.

Ultimately came off fairly well, nudged along by the advantageous fact that it ended up being a celebration of winners who are generally likable and sympathetic.

Loved the idea of having big stars fete the top-acting nominees... The idea worked best when the tributes came from longtime friends rather than current co-stars. Let's make it a tradition, shall we?

At the evening's end, there was joy that The Hurt Locker won, but it was sort of a letdown because the ceremony lacked excitement. The choice of hosts Baldwin and Martin, which struck me as inspired, turned out to be a miscalculation.

The delivery was expert and warmly conversational, like one of those old-school comedy teams.

Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin weren't terrible hosts, but nor were they particularly memorable. These are two of the funniest men on the planet, but they seemed uncomfortable swapping generic one-liners in the opening monologue.

Together, these two weren't as bad as memory may suggest, but there was a fogyish repartee between them that felt very 1950s.

Despite organizers' promises that the show's opening would be the "most dynamic" in Oscar's history, though, it was dull -- Martin and Baldwin's gentle "ribbing" of the various nominees was unfunny.

From jokes that fell flat to uncooperative stars to a hugely memorable Kanye moment, at parts the ceremony felt more like an underrehearsed talent show than the most important Hollywood night of the year.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had the right idea when it selected two hosts for the Oscars. It just picked the two wrong men.

Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin were game in their attempts to prop up the lame awards-show material, but they were somewhat restrained by the fact that a good half of the available jokes were off limits because freakin' Alec Baldwin was the punchline.

If we learned anything from the 2010 Oscars, it's that the more the AMPAS tries to change things, the more they stay the same, sadly.

These Oscars, more than any in memory, wanted to please every demographic, except seniors... I don't know if it succeeded, but it left the Rockista and I asking ourselves often "Who the heck is that?"
