Critics Consensus

Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin share an amiable comedic rapport, but their gentle barbs do little to liven up the placid 82nd Oscars, a ceremony that can't seem to decide whether it wants to be hip for the kids or staid for the old guard.

This was indeed a night that made history -- David Letterman is now no longer the worst-ever Oscars host. Co-presenters Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin proved they couldn't hit a gag with a trunkload of IEDs.

It had no moments that felt fleet, loose or new. It resembled nothing so much as a doomed ocean liner, huge and bloated, so determined to be stately that it couldn't turn itself around.
