Some friends who are all avid fantasy football fans try to balance their time between the league and their real lives. It becomes a challenge, though, when the good-natured competition gives way to a win-at-all-costs mentality, which begins to spill over into their relationships and even the workplace. It's a cutthroat competition to win the league -- and the bragging rights that come with the feat. The sitcom features a plethora of cameos by real-life NFL players, who play themselves on the series.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Unabashedly raunchy and juvenile, The League's profane humor and sometimes mean-spirited cast will repel or attract viewers in equal measure.

Cable's FX, which has reliably churned out good watching for most of this decade, drives off a cliff tonight with an offensive and shockingly unfunny sitcom, The League. Go to Full Review

The ensemble of The League helps elevate some of the more mediocre writing with a very talented collection of recognizable faces. Go to Full Review

The humor is tasteless and irresistible, an unlikely mix of juvenile jokes about sex and bodily functions, with time-honored elements of screwball comedy. Go to Full Review

In the history of advertiser-supported television -- cable or otherwise -- perhaps no weekly series has pushed the envelope to this extent. But if you're game, The League is funny in fits, spurts and spots. Go to Full Review

The League never feels too sitcommy and never wears its premise too thin due to the great chemistry of the cast. Go to Full Review

Ali O @Titadab05 12/06/2023 Great start to a series and it's about fantasy football. Subsequent seasons get stranger and way more off the beaten path See more Jamie G @RT44498733 01/24/2023 The cast is good and talented but the premise and execution could use some work. The vulgarity and crudeness of the show aside (I actually enjoy a lot of the humor itself), I think what really differentiates this show from something like IASIP is that the characters are super one-dimensional and seem to legitimately not care about each other at all. In IASIP (I use this as comparison because the style of raunchy, vulgar humor is somewhat similar) they do terrible things but the fact that they're close friends, almost family comes through despite what happens (exception being Dee and her car troubles). In the League, it legitimately feels like they give no fucks about what happens to each other, they do things and "pranks" that ruin relationships, cause potentially life-threatening bodily harm and prioritize fantasy football over people's well being. A prime example being when Ruxin had a stroke, their response was to stand around and crack jokes instead of actually trying to help him. There are no moments to balance all the negativity they commit towards each other and half the time, you wonder if they're actually friends. The Andre relationship especially feels like a kid who's being bullied thinking the bullies are his friends. The depth in this entire show is really lacking especially when compared to IASIP. See more 04/06/2020 This show is really weird. But I enjoyed it. Comedy and fantasy football - it is a great combination. See more 10/23/2017 Crude, obnoxious, raunchy, but very, very funny. 4/5 stars See more 08/28/2016 Wow, a young series I have watched all seasons at least three times. As a brit, I have never heard of any of the cast and the roles they play were well played and the dynamics between these friends becomes instantly recognisable. I wish my fantasy football leagues (both nfl and soccer) were as entertaining and all consuming. So sad it is all over. See more 07/13/2016 Good comedy built around whats becoming america's favorite past time; fantasy football. My biggest flaw in show is that its built around only 4-5 characters. A fantasy football league would be very boring with this few of remembers. Hard to believe that the gang can care about a league in which the difficulty would be at a minimum with such few participants and one of the members Taco is so dumb its hard to believe anyone would want to be friends with him. The episode called mr gibblets is very funny but yet the whole first season is only 6 episodes. Like the cast i was left wanting a little more but ultimately im satisfied and happy that fantasy sports gets some lime light. See more Read all reviews
