The Exorcist (1973) Greg Mims All things considered, The Exorcist, in terms of shocks per hour, qualifies, at least superficially, as an entertaining film although not a horror classic.

Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (1969) Hazel Garland It is a movie every married couple should see. Frank and to the point, the movie is Culp's best since leaving TV's "I Spy" series.

Cactus Flower (1969) Hazel Garland Ingrid Bergman stars in her first Hollywood film in 20 years, and is as usual great. Walter Matthau is always wonderful, but TV's Goldie Hawn almost steals the picture. She should get an Oscar nomination for her role as "Toni."

Superfly (1972) Larry G. Coleman There is fine acting throughout the film. Ron O'Neal's performance is superior.

The Learning Tree (1969) Walter Burrell [The Learning Tree] is one of the finest movies you will ever have the pleasure of viewing. It is superior in every aspect; the photography is entrancing, the direction is sensitive and consistently excellent, the acting is thoroughly professional.

Amazing Grace (1974) Gregory Mims Despite the fact that she hasn't made a film since 1933 (the classic The Emperor Jones) Jackie "Moms" Mabley has lost none of her natural timing and performing ability.

Three the Hard Way (1974) Gregory Mims Only Williamson, among the three male leads, manages to strike a human spark as an identifiable person.

The Spook Who Sat by the Door (1973) Gregory Mims [The film] by virtue of its well balanced content and overall intelligence qualifies as one of the better than average films presenting Black realities on screen.

Serpico (1973) Gregory Mims It's Pacino's show anyway. His performance alone makes this film worth seeing. Pacino is Serpico. Pacino is "Serpico."

Slaughter (1972) Rossi Jackson Most of the action is staged so badly and the dialogue delivered so awkwardly that the effect is ludicrous.

Black Caesar (1973) Gregory Mims The acting, though spotty, is generally convincing. In fact, this may just be the best performance Fred Williamson has given to date.

Trick Baby (1973) Rossi Jackson [The filmmakers] have watered down, misadapted and ultimately messed up Iceberg Slim's original work.

Gordon's War (1973) Gregory Mims Ossie Davies, perhaps the most underrated director in the entire Black film/stage community, has shown such remarkable restraint in the fashioning of this film, that its plausibility is rarely strained within its context.

Black Girl (1972) Gregory Mims Black Girl sensitively etches the layers the Black woman's experiences.

Slaughter's Big Rip-Off (1973) Gregory Mims Foremost on my list of things unpleasant and severe that I wish to have blotted from my memory is the entire 90 minute span of the most recent Black oriented film thriller, Slaughter's Big Rip-Off.

Death Wish (1974) Gregory Mims Although we may find the views expressed in Death Wish unacceptable on any level, still, the basic story line, despite its idiotic perspective, might have made an interesting film, had it been handled properly.

Shaft in Africa (1973) Gregory Mims The latest M.G.M. John Shaft thriller is about as effective as yesterday's bowl of oatmeal.

The Bus Is Coming (1971) Sharon Scott The film is plagued with insensitive commentary and perspective of the young black American's pursuit for a more sensible world.

The Organization (1971) Sharon Scott I, for one, cannot say exactly what is going on in the film.

Busting (1974) Gregory Mims By itself, Busting exists as a tough little urban police drama with moralistic pretensions. However, in a longer view, from the field, the film is merely a combination of every city cop movie you've ever seen.

Come Back, Charleston Blue (1972) Hazel Garland While it is a very good movie, it lacks some of the quality that made its predecessor [Cotton Comes to Harlem] so great.

The Dirty Dozen (1967) Walter Burrell A well-directed and highly enjoyable movie which, as a whole, deserves the high crest of financial success it's currently enjoying.

Trouble Man (1972) Larry G. Coleman It is surprising that [director Ivan Dixon] and Robert Hooks, a talented stage and television actor, would involve themselves in a film that does little justice to their talents.

The Liberation of L.B. Jones (1970) Diane Perry Attempts to enlighten, educate, and inform, become bogged down in the rhetorical nonsense of a seemingly contrived situation, never justified, throughout the film, which leaves the viewer wondering if anyone involved is at all serious.
