Tom Clancy's Without Remorse (2021) John Urbancich They say that death just follows around Clancy hero John Kelly. Regardless, don't blame Michael B. Jordan, the guy who plays him, for killing the movie. That distinction goes to an insanely convoluted screenplay and too many tedious action sequences.

Together Together (2021) John Urbancich In the hands of producer/director/writer Nikole Beckwith, who coaxes the standard competent work from Helms and a remarkably likable performance from standup comic Harrison, some real movie chemistry is made.

Vanquish (2021) John Urbancich Action junkies might find something to embrace, while the rest of us likely will have to settle for a one-liner from a bad guy happily quipping: "I heard you killed more people than Quentin Tarantino."

Touch (2020) John Urbancich Not only did the filmmaker become the first western woman to shoot an indie feature in the People's Republic of China, her performance in the leading role certainly will open some eyes, too.

Thunder Force (2021) John Urbancich A funny female friendship for much of the first hour becomes just so much nonsense in the second.

French Exit (2020) John Urbancich A minor player suddenly stands up in a Paris flat and shouts: "I don't like these people! These are not normal people!" . . . I understood the young man's pain, because I didn't like anyone much, either.

Concrete Cowboy (2020) John Urbancich Elba's dramatic heft and legitimate star power certainly do have their moments, especially during some potent father-son exchanges.

Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) John Urbancich The incredibly impressive new technology gives this latest entry into the WB MonsterVerse another step up in terms of FX work, but the story? Please! It's simply dirt dumb.

The Courier (2020) John Urbancich Benedict Cumberbatch smartly returns to espionage mode as an everyman hero who actually helped keep the infamous Cuban Missile Crisis from turning even scarier. Who knew?

The Father (2020) John Urbancich In a fine ensemble, the most fabulous bit of casting is pairing the grand Olivia Williams opposite Colman in the same movie. I mean, wasn't it just yesterday that we were all getting the two of them mixed up in our own heads? Bellisimo!

Coming 2 America (2021) John Urbancich Murphy's smiling Zamundan ruler allows the silly plot to swirl around him while staying loyal to his wife (Shari Headley), father (James Earl Jones) and ever-devoted servant (Hall, who also shows off his chops in multiple roles).

Raya and the Last Dragon (2021) John Urbancich With the always funny Awkwafina offering her rock-solid vocal accompaniment, Sisu becomes the genuine scene-stealing star of this pretty piece.

Cherry (2021) John Urbancich Just wish the two young leads added a bit more heft to this good-looking, multigenre, Cleveland-based tale. The Michael Rispoli cameo is a much welcome highlight.

The United States vs. Billie Holiday (2021) John Urbancich The performance of a new "Lady Day" (first name Andra) demands watching. She sings, struts and simply startles as the tragic and legendary chanteuse of the title.

Nomadland (2020) John Urbancich Writer/director Chloe Zhao centers on a world of transient folks who make it on their own in gorgeous Western landscapes. Headed by Frances McDormand, the cast includes a few real American nomads who seem like natural actors, too.

Minari (2020) John Urbancich Many will fall hard for this warm, truth-based tale from Lee Isaac Chung, whose own South Korean family apparently moved from California to an Arkansas farm when he was a lad about the same age as the film's scene-stealing Alan S. Kim.

Land (2021) John Urbancich First-time director Wright's efforts behind a feature film camera suffer from lots of silence and -- except for those undeniably showy gifts of nature -- little energy in a story we have seen played before with more vibrancy and less predictability.

The Mauritanian (2021) John Urbancich Unless you enjoy long faces on legal eagles dealing with endless procedural delays, actor Tahar Rahim is probably the best reason to see this post-9/11 drama about a nice guy who knew a bad guy and got tossed into a Guantanamo hell for almost 15 years.

Falling (2020) John Urbancich First-time feature director Viggo Mortensen auspiciously writes, composes, produces and copes with fab co-star Lance Henricksen, as a combustible father spitting out deep-rooted prejudices now without mental filters being slowly disabled by dementia.

The Little Things (2021) John Urbancich The heavyweight performances, some of the finest in a serial-killer thriller since Anthony Hopkins played that guy who enjoyed liver and fava beans with a nice Chianti, carry it through to the thought-provoking conclusion.

Herself (2020) John Urbancich What Lloyd and the screenplay so nicely spotlight are Sandy's attempts to make a legitimate home for her kids and, as the saying goes, it takes a village. In fact, that might mean at least a couple of Dublin city blocks worth of friends and acquaintances.

Greenland (2020) John Urbancich It's been a while since we've seen a truly watchable disaster movie, but the genuinely human and beautifully effects-laden "Greenland" just might be the one to instigate another run on such a tricky genre.

The Racer (2020) John Urbancich Director/co-writer Kieron J. Walsh, an obvious cycling expert, takes a more dramatic than emotional spin with an athlete whose career, checkered though it is, remains the vehicle to chase his actual and impregnable addiction: the race itself.

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (2020) John Urbancich Wolfe takes what he can from Davis and an especially forceful Boseman, an artist who never lets us move our eyes off of him during dialogue that had to be so incredibly difficult to deliver while knowing the circumstances of his own mortality.

Black Bear (2020) John Urbancich The film being made within the film offers head-gamesmanship at its finest, not to mention a crew of mostly horny and incompetent fools. The drama comes from potent writer/director Lawrence Michael Levine, who should not be included in the latter group.

The Croods: A New Age (2020) John Urbancich There's more than a little to keep us involved, but the returning and star-studded voice cast -- headed by a fabulous Nicolas Cage and Catherine Keener, as cave-dwelling Mom and Dad, Grug and Ugga Crood, does much of the heavy rock-lifting.
