Alfonso Cuarón builds the world through streets, propaganda, cages and frightened people rather than endless explanations, making the collapse of society feel immediate and real. Clive Owen is excellent as a tired, disillusioned man who gradually finds a reason to care again, while Clare-Hope Ashitey gives humanity and personality to a character who could easily have become only a symbol. The long action sequences are astonishing, especially the car attack and the final journey through a devastated city, but the technique always serves the story. Brutal, tense, beautifully made and still disturbingly relevant. The world is harsh, believable, and frightening precisely because it never feels exaggerated. At first I thought the central premise made no sense: if humanity can't have children anymore, why on earth would any country reject immigrants? They should be begging people to come. Then I remembered I live in a country where deaths vastly outnumber births, yet immigration is still treated as a threat instead of a necessity. That's when the movie landed its hardest punch.
