Meghan C @RT71082302 7h As someone who was an art historian and art gallery manager for several years in NYC, this movie perfectly encapsulates the ridiculous exploitation and greed ride within the art world, from gallery owners to museum curators and even sometimes the artists themselves. I personally appreciate the surreal, yet campy horror aspect that teaches the characters a dark lesson. One of my favorites, coming from someone who is not a notorious film critic. Take that as you wish, but I’ll continue to recommend it as the movie that reveals the art world’s underbelly well. The problem is that the film never turns that idea into something as sharp or memorable as it should be. For a while it works, especially when it mocks snobbery, ego, and the way art becomes business and empty pose. Visually it is striking, with recognizable faces and a style that wants to feel bizarre and sophisticated, but most of it comes across as posture rather than real inspiration. The cast does what it can, yet the film never makes you care enough, either as satire or as horror. In the end it feels like a wasted opportunity: a good idea trapped inside a film with no real soul and very little staying power. I like what they were going for, but it took too long to get there.
