A Samurai in Time isn’t just having fun with fake swords and chonmage wigs, as it also provides a lot of gentle reflections about history, modernity, and our place in it all. Go to Full Review

A Samurai In Time is a beautiful and genuinely endearing love-letter to the chanbara genre. Go to Full Review

Yasuda knows that he has something special in his hands, not only as a love letter to the jidaigeki but also as a deeply heartfelt examination of what happens when time is taken away from you and how one begins to find oneself again. Go to Full Review

Despite... being a little distended in runtime, A Samurai in Time ends beautifully, guided to a safe landing by Yasuda, who capably balances genres and references with considerable amiability and skill. Go to Full Review

In the lead role, Yamaguchi is genuinely excellent, nuanced and heartbreakingly earnest (in keeping with the tone of the film). Go to Full Review

david C @Gamewriter 3d This is a fun and endearing time-travel drama that features some solid performances and thoughtful angles. I wouldn't say it merits a 100% on here, but it's definitely worth a watch esp for viewers familiar with the TV samurai genre. It takes a bit of an extreme turn at the end, imho, and I do wish the hero had more to say about modern society. Instead, the focus tends to be on humor and character foibles, which often pay off but sometimes seem a bit twee for the story of a man lost in time. See more r96 s @RT00952237 Aug 19 'A Samurai in Time' is truly splendid. I wouldn't actually describe it as anything super enthralling or anything, but it is supremely watchable, fairly amusing and surprisingly hearty - the 120+ minute run time flew by. I'd happily revisit this one. The performances of Makiya Yamaguchi and Norimasa Fuke are of real quality, both individually and as a collective. I totally believed and bought into the trajectory of the characters, which is impressive as otherwise they've could've been quite plain 'fish out of water' types. Yuno Sakura (cool to read about her backstory for this, same can be said for the film as a whole in fact), Rantaro Mine and Tsutomu Tamura manage to stick out behind the main two, as do a few other of the more minimal roles in this; e.g. Manko Kurenai’s. It does lean on the out of place trope, but I don't mean that negatively whatsoever because they add their own thing to keep it feeling fresh. As the minutes tick by, it relies less and less on that and the, relatively more unique, conclusion is the film at its best in my opinion. Great film! It was also nice to learn a bit about Jidaigeki, too. My first venture into its world, I believe. See more Steve C @RT19610513 Jul 3 Just watch it. Enough said. See more MASAHIRO O @RT51683165 05/20/2025 Like the characters in this film, the actors and people at the studios who love samurai movies have joined forces to make this film, and it is a film that gives us such an emotional impact that it is hard to believe that it is a low-budget indie film. It is now available on Amazon Prime Video in Japan, and I have watched it three times. See more Ashton H @RT48562517 03/26/2025 I made an account to review this movie. Incredible, I loved everything about this. I went in thinking it was a lighthearted comedy, and came out changed lol - kosaka was an incredible character and he was played fantastically. There were so many details in his stance, his movements, the way he held himself throughout the movie and it blew me away. Also, the lighting and scene setting was FANTASTIC, and I loved the detail of the in-universe actors having worse wigs and more obvious actor-makeup. Tl;Dr - best movie I've seen this year by FAR. See more Hiro K @RT57217922 11/17/2024 In Japan this movie started from one theater like Don’t stop the camera. Same style promotion. Relay on the theater movie lover’s reputation, theater numbers are increasing still now. Time slip story starts from typical time slip comedy , a samurai time slipped in the middle of samurai movie shooting at now and we can laugh at him a lot. His great effort makes him a good samurai movie actor. Not only funny but also clear story of history make audience into serious drama. Whole 2hours , I could enjoy this movie. Katana sword fighting shooting was really cool and scary , best sword fight I ever watched. My English is not good at expressing my excitement about this movie. Hope lots of people watch this and understand what is going on in this movie . At least enjoy excellent sword fight. See more Read all reviews
