All-in-all, Batti Gul Meter Chalu is a film which has its heart in the right place. Better editing and a shortening of length by twenty minutes would have made the film more impactful.
This is just shabby filmmaking all around. It goes to show that today's producers don't care for the craft either, as long as there's a "message," a digital revolution and a rousing monologue.
No one is expecting the artist in Singh to deliver a masterpiece with every creation but the direction is very sloppy by any standard and certainly not expected from the director with some decent experience.
The story, by writer duo Siddharth-Garima, stretches on forever without saying much. Singh devotes too much time to the friendship between the three characters.
Butti Gul Meter Chalu had a lot of promise, but just like the government it targets, it fails to deliver.
BGMC loses power under the load of its heavy-duty screenplay.
Buried beneath the melodrama, grandstanding and quick-fix approach is the very real issue faced by millions of Indians. Sushil articulates the problem only at the very end.
