Carl David L @RT13216007 Oct 4 Because the director is Francis Ford Coppola, your expectations are higher, so I've rated this as I would any move whose director I didn't know. As a Coppola movie, it's only a 2.5 star film, if that makes any sense. This movie looks like something you'd see in cut scenes in an old video game. There is clearly a lot of green screen background work, and some pretty dreadful video editing. This kind of technology had already been fairly well mastered in Sin City seven years earlier, and it was done better back then. Colored objects against black and white tableaus were already a movie and photographic cliché. The low budget shows, and the performances match the budget. None of the actors are truly invested, and I'm not even sure Coppola was invested. I know he was working out some issues over the death of his son, so I hope he found a better outlet than this movie. What little catharsis the ending provides is a flick of the tongue over a chocolate bar. I wanted the whole bar, not just a crummy lick. There are no new themes mined here, and the old themes aren't treated all that originally. It's a self-indulgent fever dream, more frustrating than its short runtime (79 minutes) should allow. When it was over I felt like I had three hours of disappointment. I love Francis Ford Coppola, and it hurts me to write this review. See more Greg K @RT77549564 Sep 19 My first thought was, “How the heck did a first year film student pull this cast??” Then I found out that this was FFC…not only that, this is the better cut?…and all my understanding of film-making crumbled. If one of the greatest directors of our time, with a really solid cast, could pump out this nonsense, anyone could make a movie. Ok, that’s a bit of hyperbole, there’s obviously some impressive stuff that’s done, it’s just done poorly. And for the love of god, why did they choose to shoot and script the scene where Kilmer first meets Fanning in a way that looked like he was about to take her to that one island that congress is stubbornly protecting? It’s incoherent, watch it if you love cringing through awful acting and dialogue. See more William S @RT74594996 Apr 23 I've seen worse movies. This one is weird and surreal, and a little corny, but all in all, I was moderately entertained watching it and don't regret spending the time on it. Can't say I'd recommend it per se, but there are worse ways to spend your time. See more Anon A @RT51367809 03/07/2025 Utterly awful. Not even worth the time out of my life it takes to spend any more time writing about it or even thinking about it. See more Mark B @Mbindon 11/14/2024 Style over substance. This is a moody dark movie that begins with promise but perhaps I am not smart enough to get it, but I don’t think that is the case I believe it is just a self indulgent exercise by the film maker. The end seems a cop out tome. So ironic the premise is there has to be a great ending to the main characters book idea and this movie died on the unearned poor ending. See more Read all reviews
