Kev D @KevDee Dec 29 Wow! An unexpected treasure! Ramin Eshraghi-Yazdi's debut film Drop is a delightful collision of art and action, love and tragedy, greed and compassion, doubt and hope; all with a sprinkle of philosophy. Truly an indy film not to be missed! See more Richard P Oct 3 While grappling with an unknown future, an aging dancer struggles to find redemption by rescuing a troubled young man from a life of crime.

Clip (Christopher Clare) is a contemporary dancer whose career seems over when his criminal past comes back to haunt him in the form of a young man, Stephan (Shemar Herbert), who is seemingly on the run from cops and criminals alike. With the goons closing in, it seems like there may be no way out for Stephan. And though he is reluctant, Clip is nonetheless determined to help Stephan escape even if it means going back to his old ways.
If you’re looking for a run-of-the-mill crime flick, you’ve come to the wrong place. Calgary filmmaker Ramin Eshraghi-Yazdi has a distinct vision for his first feature, and that approach places just as much emphasis on the dance scenes as the chase sequences. With Drop, he engages and challenges the audience with an original take on the crime drama and announces himself as a rising talent. See more Caitlind B Mar 4 Drop was full of surprises! While the film was about a kid in trouble with a gang, it watched like a love letter to the medium of dance – in all its contemporary forms! My favourite parts of the movie were the interludes of hip-hop and breakdancing and jazz dance and physical movement... some of the scenes left me feeling breathless, as much from watching people do something physically demanding as the suspense of the story itself. The two main actors were really great to watch on screen. Christopher Clare had some exceptional moments, especially closer to the end of the film (no spoilers here!) While the narrative circled issues related to police and gang violence, it never quite tipped over into the tropes we've learned to expect. There were moments of surprise and redemption for each character. For those living in Calgary, it was really neat to watch familiar landmarks fly by on screen! The filmmaker did so much with a very tight budget, and it was amazing to see DJD, Workshop Studios, the CP rail lines, and the landscapes of Calgary playing into this narrative. So curious to see what the filmmaker does next!! See more Fatrok 03/01/2025 Beautiful film with heartfelt moments. Please watch this film. Kudos! See more Bahhaj T 02/24/2025 A beautifully rendered, heartfelt slice of indie cinema, Drop is visually striking and compelling. Built around the magnetic presence of Clip, an aging dancer grappling with a fading career and troubled past, the film balances ambient artistic performance with a storyline that feels authentic and grounded. Drop does for contemporary dance what Once did for street musicians, placing a brilliant performer at its center and crafting a spirited story around him. It is a film deserving of a wide audience, which will hopefully come to it in time. See more Houman E 02/22/2025 Honest, Gripping, and Creative – A Soulful Take on Gang Life Through Dance Indie cinema thrives on risk-taking, and Drop is a prime example of fearless storytelling. A dramatic and soulful fusion of gang life and interpretive dance, the film pushes creative boundaries, delivering an honest and gripping narrative that lingers long after the credits roll. At the heart of Drop is Trey, a young man torn between the harsh realities of his gang-affiliated neighborhood and his growing passion for dance. Raised in a world where violence speaks louder than words, he finds an unexpected outlet in movement—one that becomes both his salvation and his greatest challenge. As tensions rise between rival crews, every confrontation plays out in striking choreography, turning the streets into a stage where survival and self-expression intertwine. The film’s brilliance lies in its ability to make dance feel as intense as any shootout. Instead of predictable action sequences, Drop uses movement to tell its story, with raw, electrifying performances that reveal emotions words cannot capture. The cinematography enhances this, seamlessly shifting between the grittiness of urban life and the fluid, almost dreamlike beauty of Trey’s performances. Backed by a hypnotic soundtrack blending hip-hop beats with eerie orchestral undertones, the film’s most powerful moments unfold in silence—where dance becomes the only language that matters. A standout sequence sees Trey locked in a slow-motion, rain-soaked battle with his former best friend, each step a heartbreaking attempt to rewrite fate. It’s a moment of pure artistry, proving Drop is not just a film but an experience. Dramatic, bold, and deeply moving, Drop challenges expectations, turning a story of violence and survival into one of rhythm and redemption. It’s a film that proves creativity knows no limits—even in the most unforgiving of places., See more Read all reviews
