What to Know

Critics Consensus

A classic haunted house story enriched with atmospheric folklore and perfectly-timed shocks, Hokum further solidifies writer-director Damian McCarthy as a modern master of horror.

Audience Says

Adam Scott plays the perfect detestable prick in Hokum, a gripping, atmospheric folk-horror that trades a bit of pacing for some truly effective jump scares.

The story sometimes wavers between the hard-to-follow and the nonsensical. But it is never less than creepy, and dread (the most underrated ingredient in horror) suffuses the film. Go to Full Review

The film is efficiently tense, despite some clunky exposition, and delivers a handful of highly effective jump scares. Go to Full Review

This eerie riff on The Shining feels as if the Irish writer-director has a better grasp on both the catch-and-release tension that the genre needs and the balancing of sharp shocks and slow-simmering dread. Go to Full Review

...Hokum looks to the most classic codes of horror, but uses them with enough intelligence and personality to make them feel fresh. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

This dark film – in story, and particularly in treatment – gets almost everything wrong when it comes to pacing, neither giving its actors any room, nor letting its characters grow into people. Go to Full Review

April 39m I enjoyed this movie. The story line and writing is good. I was definitely a little scared. The only thing is I feel like there was some things that were left unexplained. See more Ethan 2h I love supporting original horror and this movie delivered. A must see while you can especially if you enjoy indie horror. This movie was actually a little scary and unnerving. Fantastic sound design. A little spoiler but this movie is a murder mystery layered with Irish folklore. I will be waiting to buy this. See more mike k 4h I liked it. Was it terrifying no but the writing and acting were good. I think it will be a classic. I think they could have spent more time on the supernatural. See more Chris 4h Best horror movie in years See more Caitlin 4h One of the scariest movies I've ever seen!! Soooo good!! See more David P 5h It's like a bitter stew with a lot of undercooked vegetables. When I want to walk 15 minutes in on Adam Scott's character but I stuck it out for a friend's recommendation. Too much pieces of plot in here too many things. Just watch 1408 again, it's cleaner. See more Read all reviews
