Critics Consensus

In the Hand of Dante is a bloated, wildly overplayed literary fever dream whose attempts to merge past and present collapse into accidental farce.

expected a bonkers romp through the arts and literature. Instead, I was fed a cold porridge of pretention that spends 150 interminable minutes hopping through time while switching between black and white and color cinematography. Go to Full Review

By the time the movie resorts to a dream sequence in which Gadot appears naked on a clamshell hovering over the ocean à la Botticelli’s Venus, the entire film has become so silly that the only thing to do between yawns is laugh. Go to Full Review

It probably could have leaned in more on Tosches’ gonzo sensibilities, as well. For the normally visionary Schnabel, this is his “Megalopolis” (2024). Go to Full Review

Hazza F @Hazza10723 4d The film explores how Dante’s Divine Comedy came to be. Its slow pacing and poetic storytelling can be difficult to follow, but those qualities also give the film a sense of beauty and elegance that becomes one of its greatest strengths. However, the constant shifts between Dante’s lifetime and the early 2000s feel confusing. The subplot about stealing Dante’s original manuscript never clearly connects to The Divine Comedy, making its purpose unclear. The scenes set in Dante’s era are visually beautiful, with stunning locations that enhance the atmosphere. In contrast, the modern-day scenes feel like they belong to a different movie. While the screenplay is ambitious, the overall structure is unfocused. The shifting timelines weaken the film’s strongest qualities, and I believe it would have been more effective if it had focused entirely on Dante’s own era. By the end, I was left wondering where The Divine Comedy itself had gone. See more bob C @RT46426964 4d This is a seriously ambitious movie and you’d need to know more about Dante than I to appreciate it. It tries to give Dante’s life/poem in tandem with a current author’s efforts to hijack a manuscript of The Comedy. There’s lots of Dante’s poetry in there too. I’d say: read a bit about him and concentrate. See more Rugile S @RugileRose Jul 7 The movie wasn't what I imagined and it didn't really surprise me.But the idea of the film is good, but maybe it wasn't successful in executing the idea in my opinion.I was deeply disappointed, especially since I used Dante's Divine Comedy for my exam. See more Abby C @RT76398404 Jul 5 Before I saw this I read two critics reviews - one loved it and the other hated it, so I figured the movie would be polarizing. Basically it's a love story. The film resembles a play in places and borrows heavily both contextually and in dialogue from medieval literature, including winking at Shakespeare. I'm thinking any number of critics and audience members will find it overly detailed, long and too 'high minded'. Which is fine, it wasn't made for quick thrills or action. I expect the audience will skew *much* older as well due to length, subject matter and pacing. The acting is strong, although Gerard Butler's accent drifts a little here and there. I felt that the intertwining of historical and present day, and the juxtaposition of black and white with colour filming, added well to the story. Overall an enjoyable tale, with a slower pace for weekend watching. See more Chery W @RT46121223 Jul 5 So well done! Captivating and entertaining on so many levels. Excellent cast, plot twists, locations, costumes, and a nuanced storyline that kept me wondering what was going to happen next. I loved it and will watch it again. The one thing I could have done less of was the gun violence. See more Sarah T @RT28048506 Jul 4 The biggest problem with this movie, in my opinion, is Gal Gadot's performance. I found her acting so wooden and unconvincing that it overwhelmed everything else the film had going for it. Every line sounded rehearsed rather than lived-in, with awkward delivery that drained the emotion from scene after scene. Gal Gadot is truly a disappointing actress and the movies she’s in are utterly underwhelming. See more Read all reviews
