Critic Reviews for Spider-Man: Homecoming

A strangely oblivious film, one that undercuts its story with exactly the sort of praise-hungriness that its hero learns to overcome.

A film that smuggles in a delightfully dorky high school saga under the banner of a too familiar superhero one.

This is the Spidey movie we've been waiting for. It's also the best Spider-Man movie of the bunch.

July 13, 2017 | Full Review…

An utter gas, a fast and very funny superflick that inserts Spidey into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe without ever losing sight of what makes him unique and beloved.

July 9, 2017 | Full Review…

What are the odds that a film with six credited screenwriters and a director (Jon Watts) with more Onion content than anything else could recapture the youthful thrill of superhero movies in general and the youthful appeal of Spider-Man in particular?

July 7, 2017 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

Watts and his five other screenwriters are better at the small stuff - the jaunty high school scenes - than the kapowie CGI battle sequences.

Audience Reviews for Spider-Man: Homecoming

Jon Watts untangles the webs in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Web-slinging its way in a little past 2 hours, Spider-Man: Homecoming manages to tell an amusing tale without trying to build up a franchise. While lacking a whole lot of character back story, it manages to blend in with the Marvel cinematic universe as it goes through the ups and downs of being a superhero. The CG is a mixed bag, along with the action, but for the most part, pass fly with bright red and blue colors. Tom Holland puts on a good show. The tone of his voice and line delivery do wonders for his character. Michael Keaton and Marisa Tomei also do a nice job filling in when Tom isn't doing the heavy lifting. Spider-Man: Homecoming swings along for a fun ride through the city. Shall I activate insta-kill?

Finally, Marvel's cinematic take on Spidey is here and it doesn't disappoint! It's equally fun and thrilling as its other franchises but is it the origin movie we've all been waiting for? Mostly, yes. Homecoming does a lot of great things and goes out of its way to breath new life into the wall crawler's story without feeling forced or unfitting, it's fresh to say the least in the genre. Then there's Marvel's hallmark at making an entertaining product as it shotguns us with laughs, romance, action, mystery and adolescent shenanigans! However if you're not too distracted by Holland's antics you can't help but feel a lot of the character's iconic values simply aren't there. Which is fine but what are the core themes and values of our new Peter Parker? It suggests and plays on a lot of ideas about youth and class disparity throughout the film but they all simply get muddled in the multi-act narrative. There isn't really a powerful theme that truly resonates when the curtains come to a close and fostering that defining aspect would have made such an elaborate tale really come together. Cohesive criticisms aside it's undeniably remarkable that they added to the MCU roster with such a beaten-to-death character so successfully. It'll be exciting to see what they do with him from here and his role in the upcoming tie-ins!

It's not as if we didn't already have great Spider-Man films, but we also had a few weaker ones. Now that Spidey has joined the MCU things are back on track. Everything about this film fits perfectly into the character's lore and the movie universe he now belongs to. The diverse cast is terrific, especially Holland and Keaton, the action pieces exciting and fun and the jokes all work. This is by far the funniest Marvel film. Now they even made a high school comedy meet an action film, and it all works perfectly.
