A new, challenging life awaits Bonnie Nolan after she discovers her husband is having an affair. Amid the rise of second-wave feminism in the 1970s, the unconventional mom decides to leave her marriage and raise her two daughters by herself. It's a struggle, but with the help of best friends Kathleen and Diana, the ladies each create their own brand of independence in a rapidly changing world that frowns upon it. Starring Alicia Silverstone as Bonnie, the comedy series is inspired by the real-life upbringing of co-executive producer Kyle Richards ("The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills").

Critics Consensus

Stereotypes and ambiguity shadow the well-meaning intentions of American Woman, though the nostalgic period setting is cute.

Muddled, plodding, unengaging -- this had no perspective other than the obvious one (men are pigs), or a plot much beyond suddenly-single-mom-gets-back-in-workplace. Go to Full Review

Although I wish it could follow its instinct for a '70s sense of the surreal, it's definitely a garish delight when it comes to the Me Decade's idea of ambiance - a set direction that never gets old. Go to Full Review

There is something of a stiffness to the program, but the silly one-liners and bald-faced female empowerment vibe of a mother striking out on her own in Beverly Hills in 1975 is well worth it. Go to Full Review

There wasn't anything that was incredibly weird or boring about the show. I was entertained. I wouldn't say that I laughed out loud at any parts. Go to Full Review

While the show held strong in keeping the period piece aspect intact, I'm not sure how strong they were depicting each woman in a satisfying way. Go to Full Review

Layla L @RT49748627 03/19/2025 Ugh! The lead actresses were the only good things about this. It was so plodding that I found it very difficult to make it to the end of each episode. The reason why I kept watching is I'd hoped to see it improve. Last year, I read a (very old) book about the woman on whom the series was based. There was NOTHING funny about her! See more 04/09/2020 I think this show had a lot of potential but was put in the wrong hands. Wrong channel, not publicized enough, shitty time slot. If this show had been on Netflix or something, it would've been a hit. See more 06/06/2019 I loved this show. I'm a huge fan of Kyle Richards and I was so proud of this effort. My husband really liked the show, too. We were disappointed that it didn't get a second season. See more 02/22/2019 Loved every minute!!! See more 08/14/2018 I love watching this show. It reminds me of so much of the 70s .. great job guys. See more 08/12/2018 Great show ` so Cool and Retro. Adam (Sam Morgan) is the HOTTEST man on Television See more Read all reviews
