Critic Consensus: Guest director Joe Dante of Gremlins fame adds some welcome visual pizzaz to "Night of the Hawk," but even he can't quite cover some of the more glaring narrative convolutions.

Episode Info

The team tracks Savage to a small town in Oregon during the 1950s where a recent string of murders has occurred and they suspect Savage is involved. Stein and Sara go undercover at a psychiatric hospital where Savage is working as a doctor to find out his plan. Meanwhile, Ray and Kendra pose as a married couple to gain the neighborhood's trust, but an interracial couple in the 1950s isn't something that goes unnoticed.

Critic reviews for Night of the Hawk

Gremlins' Joe Dante is at the helm (yes, you read that correctly) and it's almost entirely devoid of action until the last few scenes, which is a-okay since it features some of the show's most fun character scenes to date.

There are a metric ton of Back to the Future jokes in the episode. No surprise, given how openly nerdy everyone has already proven to be.

It even found more success than previous installments in trying to add romantic drama. But Crump's underwhelming performance and the sense that the show's plot is just spinning in circles prevented this episode from being all it could be.

It's like 11.22.63 but on, say, LSD!

Joe Dante of Gremlins fame is a great pick for this episode, and he smoothly transitions from fantasy horror to comic banter to dramatic character moments over the course of the episode.
