This workplace comedy is set in a run-down animation studio where an eccentric crew puts together the TV show "Dippy Duck." Eager new Midwestern cartoonist Skip Tarkenton can't believe his good fortune to be working there - an attitude not shared by his cynical colleagues: Brooks, an insecure senior artist; sarcastic film editor Andrea; unimpressive joke writer Marty; Wally, a voiceover artist who no longer remembers what his own voice sounds like; and Roland, one of the few black artists in the business. As "Dippy Duck" teeters on the edge of cancellation, the veterans rely on newcomer Skip to rescue their show.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Duck Factory needs time to come out of its shell, but an appealing cast lead by a fresh-faced Jim Carrey and a sophisticated hook give this plucky sitcom potential.

It's a comedy, but the tone is decidedly up-scale Burnsian. That means it's not a stupid show, not a typical three-camera sitcom with riotous laugh track and boo-boo-headed build-ups resolved in the third act. Go to Full Review

As Skip Tarkenton, newcomer Jim Carrey is quite appealing. He has a genial, wide smile and amiable manner that make his character entirely believable. Go to Full Review

Burns and director Gene Reynolds have gone for a gentle style of humor that derives from relationships rather than pratfalls, one-line zingers and crazy situations. But even within that context, the material isn't strong enough to cement a viewing habit. Go to Full Review

The major problem with The Duck Factory is that it can't decide if it is doing television comedy or movie comedy... As a result, the show's timing, delivery and pace are unforgivably ragged. Go to Full Review

The Duck Factory has too much talent not to be considered a show of potential promise, but after its first exposure tonight the best that can be! said is that it's still a show of promise. Go to Full Review
Mark Wolf Charlotte Observer 05/24/2022
The Duck Factory has several bright lights in its ensemble cast and a number of on-the-mark comic moments. It also has some characters which don't work, some humor which is stock television yukyuks, and an overbearing laugh track. Go to Full Review
