Recently divorced 41-year-old Toby Fleishman dives into the brave new world of app-based dating with the kind of success he never had dating in his youth, before he got married at the tail end of medical school. But just at the start of his first summer of sexual freedom, his ex-wife Rachel disappears leaving him with 11-year-old Hannah and 9-year-old Solly and no hint of where she is or whether she plans to return. As he balances parenting, the return of old friends Libby and Seth, a potential promotion at the hospital that is a long time coming, and all the eligible women that Manhattan has to offer, he realizes that he'll never be able to figure out what happened to Rachel until he can finally face what happened to their marriage in the first place.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

The characters Fleishman Is in Trouble spends time with aren't the most likable bunch, but the series examines their foibles with compelling insight -- and they're brought to life by a terrific trio of stars.

Caplan's performance is the vital anchor of the series. Without her, and without Brodesser-Akner's graceful writing for her to manipulate so dexterously, Fleishman Is in Trouble would feel a lot less substantial. Go to Full Review

As a casual watch it’s good fun, but it runs out of steam. Go to Full Review

... what may have felt like narrative failures suddenly make a sharp, satirical sense, as does the essential overprivileged whininess with which we began. Go to Full Review

With original visual resources and a voiceover that rather compliments what's being seen instead of underlining it, Fleishman is in trouble is one of those series that isn't in a rush to show its hand... [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Brodesser-Akner doesn't tell a tale of good guys and bad guys, and indeed, despite portraying Rachel's abandonment for what it is, it doesn't glorify Toby as an innocent martyr. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

C B. @anttanager Oct 2 Digs up lots of truths most people fight daily about their relationships so probably an awkward watch for couples, haha. Interesting and well done - ending didn’t seem to fit the long tortuous journey of self re-discovery for the main characters though… See more Yuriria M Aug 22 A deep and interesting story of three characters and one mainly about relationship and mid life crises. The acting it’s captivating and persuasive; each of the main characters performance is a complete treat, a master class. The writing hits a different level; inspiring, fun, dramatic and realistic. I will be waiting for the second season. This show It’s a must see! See more Stephen C @bob25009 May 27 Dramatic? Yes. Fun? Absolutely!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! See more Mason M Apr 3 I'm giving Fleishman Is in Trouble a 5 star rating, and I don't give that rating lightly. This is the best TV show I've ever seen. This show did what every good piece of art should do, it made me feel things, and it had such a profound emotional effect on me. This show depicts parts of my life that I have never seen depicted on screen before, and it does so beautifully at that. It's just so amazingly written, it expresses thoughts that I have about my own life that I've never been able to put to words before, and they somehow found a way to phrase these things in such an accurate and profound way. This show took such an emotional toll on me, and to a degree that I've never gotten from art before where I couldn't stop thinking about it. And the show is extremely well made too. The casting is perfect, and the performances from Jesse Eisenberg and Lizzy Caplan (two of my all time favorite actors) bring these characters to life in phenomenal performances. And pretty much the rest of the cast gives top notch performances too. This show also has so much interesting and meaningful subtext in the writing that it would be almost impossible to analyze the show in its entirety. It's written spectacularly and the photography is beautiful too. I'm not in the middle age, I'm actually a young man, but I could see so much of myself in these characters and their situations. Fleishman Is in Trouble is the greatest show of all time and it made me acknowledge parts of myself I don't usually acknowledge, it moved me like no other art has ever done before. Libby is at max the third important character in order (his daughter actually has more screen time and drama), every episode is powerful, and then you give me this lame last episode in which 90% of it is about Libby and her acknowledgement of her love to her lame husband? Who gives a f**k about that?? Instead of giving me an hour of action and resolutions of the two main characters, you give me half a sec of the second main character and 5 minutes of the main character?!?!?!?!?!
