Billy Crystal remains a charming emcee, but his retread of old bits does little to enliven a painfully restrained 72nd Oscars that feels even longer than its gargantuan runtime.

If anything, Oscar 2000 was just too polished and genteel to fully satisfy... Even host Billy Crystal's satirical barbs at the nominees were too well rehearsed and neatly packaged to bite the way they should.

It was far from the humdrum affair viewers have come to expect. Thanks to many winners' genuine appreciation, Billy Crystal and a musical medley that couldn't have been classier, the night certainly had its moments.
