Critics Consensus

The Event has an intriguing premise with a tantalizing story, but the chance for the show to lose focus is high.

"The Event" is no show -- it's filler loud, explosive filler material that tries to convince you its interesting by stealing something from a sci-fi novel and insisting that it is. It's not. Go to Full Review

What's ultimately frustrating about The Event is not the lack of answers or the dreadfully lazy characterizations. It's the insistence that the plot somehow taps into something that's happening right now in the United States. Go to Full Review

If you can tolerate the overly histrionic pilot and are curious enough to find out what "the event" actually is, of which there is no mention in the pilot, then NBC has a Lost-esque show on its hands. Count me out. Go to Full Review

james o @RT63376403 05/24/2025 the series invoking comparsions to 24 and Lost. See more Felix R @FSR2003 02/08/2022 The first few episodes were hard to follow, way too much jumping back and forth in the timeline. The last few episodes didn't jump around quite so much in time but kept jumping around to different parts of the story and replaying segments you had already seen more than once. Still, I would have liked to have seen a second season to see where they story would go from there. It could have been interesting. The actor choice for US president was really strange, the president is supposed to be a US born of Cuban American immigrant parents, but they picked a black American actor for the roll who as far as I know doesn't even speak Spanish. The roll kind of lacked any credibility given that the significantly vast majority of Cuban Americans are white, and I am not aware of any major Cuban American political figure of Afro-Cuban descent. The role would have been more credible had they actually had a Cuban American for the roll, or at least someone that could pass for Cuban American. See more 09/13/2018 Shame these stupid networks cancelled this masterpiece of a show See more 07/30/2016 After an incredibly promising first three episodes, with one of the most intriguing premises I've seen for a show in a while, it's a boring uneventful show. I've read many reviews that say it's like 24, Lost, and more that I can't remember. It's like those except not good. The show is like a bad episode of 24. And way too many flashbacks. They would be fine in a lesser amount, but they're giving us way too much backstory. See more 02/23/2016 I really think this series was pretty cool, but, after 8 seasons of 24 and 10 seasons of Supernatural, this show seems pretty weird. Why do you have to mess up with Aliens! See more 10/09/2014 Though short-lived, NBC's sci-fi series The Event delivered a thrilling and action-packed adventure. The show follows several characters whose stories intertwine as a terrorist name Thomas attempts to force the President to free a group of detainees from another world who are being held at a secret U.S. prison. The storytelling is a bit problematic with time jumps and switches to seemingly unrelated character stories. But by mid-season this is tightened up and becomes more fluid and engaging. The show also does an impressive job at creating interesting characters that have some ambiguity, and switch between hero and villain as the season unfolds. Still, there are a number of failed subplot and mysteries that are never answered or don't add much to the overall story arc. While it was problematic at times, The Event ultimately proved to be an exciting and compelling series worthy of more than the one season it got. See more Read all reviews
