Critic Reviews for The Expanse Season 5
All Critics (29) | Top Critics (5) | Fresh (29) | Rotten (0)
Even with the protomolecule saga relatively sidelined this season, "The Expanse" draws so much strength from exposing how fragile an expansive society like this is.
The Expanse this season served up several disaster movies, a bullet-riddled action thriller and family drama, and it did a spectacular job with each.
Science fiction is always about the present, even if - especially if - it's set in the future.
Season 5 gets off to a blinding start and has a good end, it's just some storylines sag in the middle, while others never get off the starting block.
This episode is full of action and suspense, and perfectly sets up what is sure to be an epic season finale!
There is one series in the vast ocean of television content that is pulling off the grand storytelling ambitions of Game of Thrones. That series is The Expanse.
The Expanse reminds us that life is fragile and power is fleeting, yet at the same time celebrates the ingenuity of mankind. Proper sci-fi drama done brilliantly well.
This moral ambiguity has always been The Expanse's strength, bolstered by a great cast and damned good special effects.
These episodes are epic.
The Expanse's keen understanding of history and politics, combined with its relatively low technology level, has allowed the show to feel about as realistic as science fiction can get.
The Expanse is not Star Wars or Star Trek but something unique and remains the benchmark for science fiction on television.
Season 5 of The Expanse is great TV, and it's great because it makes you think as much as it makes you feel.

4m agoThis series should be called: How to get away with massmurder. Why is Nagata considered to be a hero? She killed more than 500 people and got a second chance, she gave the protomolecule to the most criminal faction, she released a terrorist who killed more than 20 people, her son and her ex are killers of millions. Are there any people out there who hope that she can safe her son? What is the point of this kind of script writing? And why has the uberterrorist to look like an arab?

2h agoA very good sciencefiction series. A lot of correct space effects scientifically correct. Worth all your time!!!!
-
1d agoMuch more focused on character development, emotions, family connections. Lots of suffering. Nothing that I really cared to see. Amos and Bobbie made it watchable.
-
1d agoThis season started off strong but too a major step down in quality towards the end of the season. The finale almost recovered the slow pacing of the second half of the season. However the handling of Alex's death, the insane ammount of time spent on Naomi (boring scenes), and the way Naomi has plot armor thicker than that of Jon Snow left me dissapointed...

2d agoGreat series productin and acting. Does a pretty good job being consistent with the book series!

2d agoIt's one of the better seasons of this show without a doubt. The acting keeps impressing for the most parts, especially for Naomi's character (Dominique Tipper). However, Holden's character and acting don't appear to progress. He keeps his incompassionate attitude, even towards Naomi. It might be justified by the sacrifices but we don't get to see any progress. I'm more impressed as we get to understand more of Amos's arc and background story and why he is as messed up but straight-forward as he used to be in previous seasons. Chrisjen's arc and subplot are thrilling as well. The viewer really feels her struggle and drive. The writers play with ambiguous character attributes and motivations where appropriate, giving the viewer room for interpretation and narrowing it down sufficiently to justify character consequences and plot consequences. Obviously, credit should also go to the book and RPG writers, but this adaptation keeps surprising me in a positive way (after a lamely-paced season 4). I would give it more points if there wasn't this one thing. Cas Anvar hasn't done anything legally offensive. It's a shame how the producers treated him. His character (Alex Kamal) deserved better. His write-off appears completely manufactured.

3d agoSlow and boring. Too much talking. The action doesn't really progress.
-
3d agoVery well done show. It is cohesive up till season 5. Season 5 is rotten.
-
4d agoGreat show. Uses better physics than most sci-fi shows. The last couple seasons look great on a 4K HDR TV!
-
5d agoBest sci-fi programme on TV before Star Trek: Discovery. I will miss it once it is gone because every episode is brilliant even if the sets are recycled. I will have to watch it all over again.
