The Ranch: Season 1 Reviews

March 21, 2018
The Bennetts feel real, and so, surprisingly, does their ranch, even if it's just a stage set. (Lighting, and sometimes the lack of lighting, appears to be key.)

The Ranch is a Netflix original, and one rather lazily done - an instance of the lack of quality control at the streaming service.

There is so much to love about this Netflix comedy.

Brash and off-putting, The Ranch is also bizarrely watchable.

There aren't many laugh-out-loud moments, but it is pretty clever and there is some great wordplay and a fun dynamic between brothers Colt and Rooster.

It has the feel of a series that's just getting its legs underneath it, which could lead to great things down the road. For now, it's enjoyable enough, thanks to the way it uses the freedom afforded it by Netflix to try new things with the sitcom format.

After six seasons, you'd think The Walking Dead would become predictable - but Sunday night's season finale likely left even the most hardened longtime fans confused, angry and sick to their stomachs.

There are so many elements of "The Ranch" that were potentially appealing, and yet when I first watched the pilot, from the very beginning I found it offputting and facile.

The Ranch establishes itself as an easily imbibed, down-home diversion replete with rough edges and mini-lessons to live by... Still, this is by and large a pleasant surprise that advances the ball just a bit further for Kutcher.

[Elliott and Winger's] scenes together, as restrained as they are, are the show's most emotionally resonant. You will want to check them out.

Despite its remote setting and small cast, The Ranch feels overrun with people and ideas.

The sitcom takes on vestiges of stage drama - almost like Louis C.K.'s "Horace and Pete" except ineffectively.

The Ranch sounds formulaic at first - and mostly, it is. But then it hits you with the hook: a note of raw, acoustic emotion that cuts through the slick studio production.

The Ranch isn't hateable as much as just bone-weary. It's a by-the-dots, or the numbers - whichever are easiest to connect - sitcom that proceeds according to formula.

The Ranch... turns out to be unexpectedly sensitive, well-acted and formally adventurous, in addition to often being broadly funny.

Beau, Rooster and Colt may trade verbal zingers, but we never doubt that their affection for one another is genuine. That alone makes The Ranch worth a visit.

The goodness sneaks up on you. It is a sitcom that is meatier than it is funny, unusually in touch with the painful, disappointing aspects of life.

A series in which everything feels not merely derivative but a little too on the nose, as if an audience weaned on such fare couldn't discern where its various beats are heading.
