Jenny Simpson was born Jennifer Barringer on Aug. 23, 1986 in Webster City, IA. After competing on the track and field team and the cross country team in high school, during which time she participated in such events as the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships, Simpson enrolled in and ran for the University of Colorado. During her tenure, she competed in the steeple chase at the NCAA Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 2006 and 2007. Shortly thereafter, Simpson qualified to join the United States' steeple chase team in the 2008 Olympics, ultimately coming in 15th place in the event. In the four years to follow, Simpson competed in the 2009 World Championships in Athletics, married runner Jason Simpson in 2010, and competed in the 2011 World Championships in Athletics; she won the gold medal in the 1500-meter race and the silver medal in the 4 x 100-meter relay race at the latter event. The following year, Simpson once again qualified for the Olympics, representing the American team in the London-based games, albeit neglecting to reach the final round of play. However, Simpson, earned a silver medal in the 1500-meter race at the 2013 World Championships in Moscow, a gold medal in the 1500-meter race at the 2014 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, and a gold medal in the 1500-meter race at the 2015 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
