Kirk Herbstreit's love of football transcended the field into television and other media. The former quarterback was born on Aug. 19, 1969, in Centerville, Ohio. He followed in his father's footsteps when he joined the Ohio State Buckeyes. First serving as the starting quarterback, he became co-captain by his senior year and set a Ohio State record for pass completions in a game. He also met his future wife, a cheerleader named Allison Butler, during this time. He graduated in 1993 with a business degree, but his interest in the game led him to become a football analyst for "College GameDay" (ESPN, 1987- ) beginning in 1996. He received a Sports Emmy nomination for his studio analysis in 1997. That same year he began penning a weekly column for "The Sporting News" magazine titled "Inside the Game With Kirk Herbstreit." He provided color commentary on ESPN Thursday night games and Saturday night college football games on ABC. He also lent his voice as a commentator for the "NCAA Football" video game series from EA Sports. He is devoted to his family, which includes four sons -- Zak, Chase, and twins Jake and Tye. When not on-camera, he taught his sons to play sports and coached youth football and baseball.
