The characters are laughable; the gymnastics are unattractive. There is nothing to recommend this film.

It's a pretty ridiculous story, and screenwriters Evan Archerd and Jeff Benjamin never figure out a way to generate any real suspense, drama or inspiration.

Unfortunately, as far as acting exercises go, Gaylord couldn't score a 5.

Cast and crew are guided by the director from manipulative cliche to manipulative cliche, as everyone tries his or her best to overlook the fact that Gaylord, despite his athletic prowess, has little or no show-business talent.

This whole movie may have been concocted on a synthesizer.

A large portion of the movie is given over to gymnastics competitions, which are not explained or photographed well enough to be very interesting.

Audience Reviews for American Anthem

An interesting movie that centralizes on "motivation" and "integrity". Good movie.

With the Olympics winding down I thought I'd post a similar themed review. I just wish it was for a better film. The attempt to make gymnatics superstar and Olympics medal winner Mitch Gaylord a movie star failed with this corny 1986 movie.

Steve Tevere (Gaylord) is a star on his high school gymnastics team, but his home life may derail him from continuing with his motivation. He does hit it off with the new gymnast Julie who has just transfered to his school.

Mitch Gaylord does have some star appeal and maybe he could have become a bigger film star had he not been straddled with this cliche-written script. He's definately good when he's performing in a gymnastics scene. There is plenty of 80's music blaring in the background.

I can personally relate to this movie because I went through the same thing Steve Trevere went through but in a different sport! The Soundtrack has such artists as: John Parr, Stevie Nicks, Andy Taylor, Mr. Mister, Graham Nash and Inxs!
