Ace Ventura: Pet Detective

Critics Consensus

Jim Carrey's twitchy antics and gross-out humor are on full, bombastic display in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, which is great news for fans of his particular brand of comedy but likely unsatisfying for anyone else.

  • Playing a celebrated finder of missing mammals, [Carrey's] so over-energized from the start you keep thinking he'll wear out his welcome pronto; 90 minutes later his lunacy is still hard to take your eyes off.

  • [Carrey's] comic language is made up of accent marks, not characters; instead of inhabiting a scene, he swallows it up and spits it out in manic doodles.

  • Unlike famous bumbling sleuths such as Inspector Clouseau and Lt. Frank Drebin, there's no consistency to the "Ace" character, and the whole movie shifts in tone from social satire to sophomoric pranks and traditional copshow plotting.

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective is quintessential 1990s Jim Carrey at work. The over-the-top antics & physicality of the film may not be for all but it's undeniable how effective it became in epitomizing its dynamic comedian to super-stardom. 3.6/5

This movie stars Jim Carrey in the titular role as a private investigator who is hired to find missing pets. When a simple pet case becomes a bigger conspiracy, Ace only has a few short weeks to solve the mystery before the big Superbowl. This movie holds a special place in a lot of people my age's hearts because they grew up with it, loving Carrey's over-the-top performance. I never saw this movie as a kid. Instead of Ace Ventura, my Jim Carrey memories include Liar Liar and Bruce Almighty. Honestly, this movie doesn't do it for me. Jim Carrey has made a career of overacting, and, while this isn't as bad as The Mask, it isn't anything to write home about. The premise is innocent enough, but the sexual jokes just didn't do anything for me save for the climactic crime-solving scene. I will say that it's a harmless family movie that audiences will enjoy if only for nostalgia's sake, but if you haven't seen either Ace Ventura movie, you aren't really missing much. Side note: I love seeing real celebrities play fictional versions of themselves, and Dan Marino in this movie is just fun.

Ace Ventura is filled with hilarious moments and surreal storytelling that make this film a comedy classic. It's funny and it's well amde and you have to credit Jim Carrey because if it wasn't for his enthusiasm this film might not have even become a cult classic.
