Merchant Marine sailors Joe Rossi (Humphrey Bogart) and Steve Jarvis (Raymond Massey) are charged with getting a supply vessel to Russian allies as part of a sea convoy. When the group of ships comes under attack from a German U-boat, Rossi and Jarvis navigate through dangerous waters to evade Nazi naval forces. Though their mission across the Atlantic is extremely treacherous, they are motivated by the opportunity to strike back at the Germans, who sank one of their earlier ships.

I'm surprised the only Oscar nomination went to the scriptwriter, because tech credits are all award-worthy. Shout out to Warner Bros. editing legend George Amy who actually won the award in the same year for cutting Howard Hawks' "Air Force." Cinematographer Ted McCord's work is also exemplary. Cast is super with Humphrey Bogart and Raymond Massey leading the way. See more 09/27/2019 This is my favorite of the WW2 movies which was made during the war. It has the usual stereotypical cast of characters, and all of them are played to perfection, not just caricature. And the Germans speak German! That alone wins them an extra star. This is the only movie that details what the merchant marines went through. Amazing that a whole branch of service is almost completely unnoticed. Action is right! Plenty of it in this WWII drama about the Merchant Marines. Bogart and Massey shine as does the supporting cast. Exciting, touching and patriotic. It is about an American tanker that is sunk by a German U-boat and the survivors spend eleven days at sea on a raft. Humphrey Bogart and Raymond Massey give amazing performances. The screenplay is good but a little slow in places. Lloyd Bacon did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed watching this motion picture because of the drama.
