Walter W Sep 30 Somehow “Around The Bend” did not ever pop up on my movie radar despite signing on two of my favourite Oscar winning actors back in 2004. It wasn’t until a valued voiceover client recommended this flick to me that I parted with $4.99 hard earned cash to Apple TV to rent this gem where the skeletons in the Lair family closet come out to play. No, this is not a horror movie, rather a funny, heartfelt, family drama involving a tale of four generations of men who go on a road trip together to search out old family secrets that connect to their past. Michael Caine and Christopher Walken play father and son, even though Walken is only 10 years younger in real life. That casting mistake cost this movie one point out of ten, even though both these actors contribute so much to making Writer/Director Jordan Roberts movie jump off the page onto my big screen TV. Josh Lucas “Jason Lair” as the grandson of Caine “Henry” and son of the estranged Walken “Turner” is going through a divorce to Kathryn Hahn “Sarah”. The best thing to come out of this bankers divorce (he really is a banker, I’m not using rhyming curse words) is his son “Zach” (Jonah Bobo). He’s a talented juvenile actor. Unfortunately he hasn’t done a lot of acting since this film’s release in 2004. Watch out for: the late Glenn Headley as Danish horror movie fan “Katrina” and “Henry’s” live in nurse who gives him a woody. BTW: the movie “Katrina” is watching is “Ghost Ship” made just 2 years earlier…so good! Fun Fact: Headley and Caine appeared together in “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” with one of my comedy heroes Steve Martin. “Around The Bend” is wonderful road trip movie with at one stage 3 Urns floating around in the back of a beat up VW Kombi Van with the word “Dig” scrawled roughly on the side panel as the “Lair” tribe travel through North America. It has a huge heart and if you’re not careful it will play with those strings. You will laugh, cry and sigh in just under 90 minutes of succinct, magical storytelling. I only wish Jordan Roberts directed more than three feature films.
