The film presents late-80s America so fetishistically that it feels at times like a follow-up to Bennett Miller's Foxcatcher (2014), and its recycling of 80s teen-movie cliches are also weirdly reverential.

Where the Bay "Transformers" movies alternated between ecstasy and dullness, "Bumblebee" is consistently middling.

A frustrating joy ride. It'd be twice as good if it was half as long.

If only not being terrible was the same as being good; Bumblebee is still just reheated nostalgia.

The movie works in large part because of the depth of Steinfeld's performance. We haven't seen such a well-realized character in any of the other Transformers movies.

"Bumblebee" does hold up as a fun, family-appropriate movie on its own terms, and redeems its beleaguered franchise in the process.

Several of the best lines come with a bit too big of a wink at the teen movie formula, which lends to a sense of irony that lingers around the edges of the otherwise deeply sincere film.
December 19, 2018
There are real emotional stakes, an appealing 1980s look and some genuinely funny jokes.
December 19, 2018
Bumblebee works because it dares to tap into a new dimension in this franchise: Legitimate emotional reactions. We humans like to refer to them as feelings!

While Bumblebee has evidently been designed as a film that adults and children can enjoy on different levels, this risks leaving both somewhat unsatisfied.

The script stays on safe, formulaic ground, but it's effective - and somehow breathes new life into a franchise that had become a junk heap.
