Set against the sun-bleached grit of Los Angeles, Crime 101 weaves the tale of an elusive jewel thief (Chris Hemsworth) whose string of heists along the 101 freeway have mystified police. When he eyes the score of a lifetime, his path crosses that of a disillusioned insurance broker (Halle Berry) who is facing her own crossroads. Convinced he has found a pattern, a relentless detective (Mark Ruffalo) is closing in, raising the stakes even higher. As the heist approaches, the line between hunter and hunted begins to blur, and all three are faced with life-defining choices--and the realization that there can be no turning back. Adapted from Don Winslow's acclaimed novella of the same name, the film is written and directed by Bart Layton (American Animals, The Imposter). Barry Keoghan, Monica Barbaro, Corey Hawkins, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Nick Nolte round out the cast.

Crime 101 delivers a thoughtful and well-acted slow-burn crime drama, elevated by its suspenseful robbery sequences and strong lead performances. The film is at its best during the cat-and-mouse moments, where tension is high and the stakes feel immediate. However, the character-driven stretches between those sequences — while narratively necessary — don’t generate the same level of suspense and can slow the pacing more than some viewers may expect. To its credit, the film lands its ending effectively, giving its central characters meaningful and satisfying resolutions. While it may not satisfy audiences looking for constant tension, fans of deliberate, psychology-driven crime dramas will likely find it rewarding.

Pretty good! Seeing Ruffalo pretend to be somebody who cares about law and order was pretty jarring though. But he did up being corrupt, so maybe not that jarring.
