Movie Info
More than two decades since she made her ground-breaking queer documentary classic, “Gendernauts” (1999), director Monika Treut returns to California to catch up with the film’s protagonists: Sandy Stone, Susan Stryker, Stafford and Max Wolf Valerio, the pioneers of the burgeoning trans movement in the 1990s. Most of them lived in San Francisco, in those days a haven for outsiders. Since then, as property prices boomed, nearly all have been priced out of the city. But the energy of the gendernauts and their supporters Annie Sprinkle and Beth Stephens is undimmed and their spirit unbroken. How have their lives changed in the intervening years? How do these civil-rights activists deal with the right-wing conservative politics that threaten the hard-won rights of social minorities? “Genderation” looks back on a time that now seems utopian and shows us the creative resistance of the gendernauts against the challenging living conditions for trans people.
