Movie Info

This gloomy Italian melodrama is set in the resort town of Rimini, the same small town as Fellini's picture I Vitelloni. The notables of the town spend their time speculating in real estate and doing a little gambling. Their interest is piqued by Daniel (Alain Delon), the magnetic new instructor at the town's high school. He has a high-strung, suicidal wife whose demands he treats with weary tolerance, as he does most things in his life. He is much drawn to a well-worn young woman, and events take a tragic turn when he takes up with her. This film marks a unique acting departure for Alain Delon and is considered one of his best screen performances. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Audience Reviews for La Prima notte di quiete (Indian Summer) (The Professor)

In "The Professor," Daniele Dominici(Alain Delon) and his wife Monica(Lea Massari) land in Remini, more or less on their feet. For him that involves teaching high school and finding a card game, led by Spider(Giancarlo Giannini). But on his first day at work, Daniele gets into trouble by going across the street to get a newspaper during class. On the plus side, he makes a connection with Vanina(Sonia Petrovna), one of his students. "The Professor" is a downbeat and thoughtful examination of two people who in different ways are haunted by their collective pasts and classic literature. In this way, the movie carefully and deliberately dispenses with the characters' histories while making neat use of the various settings. At the same time, the scenes involving Alain Delon and Giancarlo Giannini resonate with their excellent chemistry together.

A sensitive, passionate, and melancholic Antonioni-like drama with great performances, namely Alain Delon as a world-weary poetry professor, captivated by his student Vanina, a beautiful girl who is also marked by problems.
