The Force isn't fully with this Lego Star Wars adventure, but its affectionate franchise callbacks and self-aware humor should please fans looking to spend their holidays in a galaxy far, far away... Read critic reviews

You're better off watching the 1978 special on YouTube.

The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special may just be a goof, but it hints at the possibility of exploring other underdeveloped aspects of The Rise of Skywalker.

At the end of the (Life) day, The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special is a fun, self-contained adventure which feels a few bricks short of a full Star Wars load.

Parents looking to share their "Star Wars" love with their children should add this to the list. It's not essential viewing for anyone else.

Will people remember this, for better or worse, with the vividness they did the 1978 original? Will it become legendary? Maybe not. But sometimes it's more fun not to be a legend.

The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special amps up that cheesiness in the best way possible, taking all the bad with the good, in a charming ode to the 1978 television special.

Dec 07, 2020Besides the framing device having references to Life Day, tree decorating, and Poe in an ugly sweater, it's not really a "Holiday" special. Really, it's better to think of this more like Lego does their take on the Robot Chicken Star Wars special. The premise involves Rey finding a device allowing her to travel through time, leading her to see famous events all through the Star Wars saga, and then these events are parodied in Lego form. I pretty quickly realized "oh, it's just a glorified sketch show," but as far as sketch shows go it's pretty fun. Nothing in it is spectacular, but I will admit there were a couple jokes that did get genuinely big laughs out of me. However, there were also long stretches that warranted little more than a smile. Still, it is charming enough in those moments even when it's not as funny as it could be. It does start to have a plot near the end when Vader and the Emperor start to mess with time and team up with Kylo Ren ending in a massive battle between characters from all films. While it's pure fanservice, seeing podracing through the Death Star or young Han teaming up with old Han to shoot Greedo is still fun, even in Lego form. It's all extremely creative, it's just a bit too long and not as funny as it could have been or should have been. But hey, on the Venn Diagram of movies that is Lego, Holiday, and Star Wars, it could have been a helluva lot worse.Michael M Super Reviewer
