Critics Consensus

Anne Hathaway acquits herself well as a believable pop star in Mother Mary, a modish psychodrama that can be frustratingly obtuse but has style to spare.

The individual ingredients in this lavish, theatrical film are promising. But while it achieves moments of dark magic -- predominantly those in which Coel gives free rein to her witchy impulses -- it doesn't quite hold together. Go to Full Review

Michaela Coel is transcendent in Mother Mary. Go to Full Review

For those who can get on its ethereal wavelength, Mother Mary is an incredibly moving evocation of the horrors and joys of finding a true artistic soulmate. Go to Full Review

Mother Mary isn't quite a horror film and most of the "horrors" are saved until the last 20 or so minutes of the film. Overall, it's a visually stunning, messy look at stardom, fashion, and repairing deeply broken friendships. Go to Full Review

Largely just two people sitting in a room talking. The dialogue is very good but if you’re going into this expecting like an Exorcist style story, then you are coming at the movie all wrong. Go to Full Review

It looks amazing, and the actors are excellent, but keeping a grip on the narrative and thematic through-lines isn't easy. Go to Full Review

SCS 6h Absolutely mesmerizing. Mother Mary is a film that feels composed as much as it is directed — every frame is lush, deliberate, and visually transporting. The fashion alone is worth the ticket: sculptural, provocative, and deeply tied to character, almost functioning as its own language within the film. The cinematography is breathtaking, balancing intimacy and grandeur with images that linger long after the credits. What stayed with me most was how the film merges style with emotional depth. It never feels ornamental for ornaments sake — the visual world heightens the tension, vulnerability, and mystique at the center of the story. The sound and score are also extraordinary, adding a hypnotic, almost devotional quality that pulls you further in. Its rare to see a film this sensorial and ambitious, where performance, costume, music, and image feel so completely in conversation with one another. Bold, artful, and immersive — one of those films you want to experience again just to notice what you missed the first time. See more MJK 8h Worst movie ever! Overly dramatic & slow. No real storyline. What was the point of making it?? See more mason 10h Great performances, surprisingly good songs, and strange story. I loved it! See more Edgar M 13h The movie was very beautifully shot. There were many beautiful visuals throughout. Both Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel were amazing and really were the glue that kept the movie together, but the story was confusing! See more Brett W 15h A new David Lowery film is always a cause for celebration -- art that washes over you, immerses you with its deeper resonating themes and feelings, sometimes piercing right into your soul. Revisiting his work is like unlocking some existential mystery that rewards no answers. Mother Mary is not David's best movie (see: The Green Knight and A Ghost Story), but it is likely the best writing to date from one of the most interesting voices in contemporary cinema.
