Critics Consensus

Seamlessly recreating one of cinema's most groundbreaking productions, Nouvelle Vague doesn't reinvent the medium the way its subjects did, but it pays tribute to their accomplishment with infectious admiration.

Linklater repays the debt in a beautiful film that eschews granular analysis of the art for a broad celebration of Frenchness at its most proudly awkward. Go to Full Review

Nouvelle Vague is more than just an in-joke for cineastes -- it’s an invitation to make something alive and radical that pisses off the right people. Go to Full Review

Nouvelle Vague is a love letter not only to Breathless, but also to any artist who’s forever kibitzing, questioning, challenging, and creating. Go to Full Review

t W Nov 13 Lots of fun, breezy. Wished there was a tad bit more drama though. See more Carlos F Nov 8 Beautiful depiction of 1960’s Paris, the interesting and determined personalities in the world of film, and their effect on society at a time when people were more intelectually engaged, more curious, more aware, less self-centered in the toxic way we are today… Also, I loved getting a window into the production of Godard’s “Breathless” and his artistic influences at the time Make sure you are well rested and relaxed, because the subtitles are easy to read and properly timed, but there is so much dialogue in French, that often you won’t be able to finish reading one line before the next one comes… don’t let that frustrate you, because the characters are so rich and the situations so endearing that you’re still able to follow the plot and thoroughly enjoy the movie See more Jason T @RT44643092 2d An astounding achievement. Uncanny and impossible, but Mr. Linklater captured, inspected, and projected an entire vibe - hook, line and sinker. The acting is literally as if they are Belmondo and Seberg... as they were? As we imagine them? Who cares. This is what it must have been, and if it wasn't, then it is even better. A fantasy of a fantasy, with a level of authenticity which borders on pure documentary. It is amazing. And that an American and English-language filmmaker shot this entirely in France, and used French actors, French production company, and the dialogue primarily in French with subtitles...unbelievable. An absolute joy to absorb. So much fun and so interesting. The interchanges between director and producer are fantastic. And the friction between Seberg (actor) and Godard (director) are intense and hysterical if you know anything about the industry. Even the special replationsip between a director and his cameraman is captured with great awarenenss and kinship. (sigh) See more Leprechaun K @LeprechaunKing Feb 16 This is better served as a 30 minute documentary as a blu-ray extra. At 106 minutes, it is painfully boring. The storytelling of Goddard's making of the classic just isn't that interesting. See more Chris M @cm1973119 Feb 9 A fascinating and brilliantly done movie, with every aspect of the genre faithfully recreated to create a stunning tribute to Jean-Luc Godard’s work. See more Declan O @pensionersescape Feb 3 I really, really wanted to like this film. I was born in the 50's so Nouvelle Vague was a huge thing as I studied French at university. Lets get straight to the element that ruined the film for me. Au Bout de Souffle was ground breaking for its unrehearsed vibrant and maybe chaotic execution. Why then is every line that comes out of Goddard's mouth in Nouvelle Vague so ponderous, rehearsed and sententious? He sounds like a collection of aphorisms from pretentious cinema philosophers, and frankly for me it got boring. Then I began wondering..is this just a very fine recreatiojn of 60's Paris with very little to underpin it as a narrative? Yes the portrayals of Seaberg and Belmondo are finely done but Goddard's character punctures the balloon every time the film felt like it might take the viewer somewhere interesting. There is little to no chemistry between the Belmondo-Seaberg characters so we learn nothing there. Missed opportunity I feel. See more Read all reviews
