The Preacher's Wife Reviews

Remakes are always tricky and they can be approached with a built-in bias that does not allow you to rate the movie on its own merits. Unfortunately it's easy to say that this movie gets it wrong in almost every way. Whitney is terribly miscast and the role proves too much for her. Denzel may be one of the few modern actors who could step in to a role originated by Cary Grant but for some reason his character is written as a bit of a buffoon. Hard to mess up such a Sweet sentimental plot but they do

Remake of a classic. Good actors, think the directing could use some work. Cute scenes with children. A few good songs.

This movie takes off from the older Bishop's Wife starring Cary Grant , Loretta Young and David Niven. This one has a similar plot but very different also. There's still the angel (Denzel), the preacher (Courtney B. Vance) and the wife (Whitney Houston). Really a very good movie and, with Whitney in it, there's lots of scenes with her singing….which is absolutely fabulous. She is soooo good! This angel is a contrast to Cary Grant in that you see him enjoying being back on earth as he plays in the snow and eats food. The mother-in-law (Jenifer Lewis) plays a very strong role with some good one-liners ("you can shop but don't be putting in any layaway")and the children are even believable. The church choir singing rocks! Gregory Hines does a very credible job as the "bad guy". He has a great part at the end when he starts to get into the music….fun to watch his transformation. Nice, nice movie….heart-warming.

Mostly cringy than emotional, also, the scenario's structure needed a lot more work and the acting is not always good.

Wonderful movie should be reedited to allow a complete uninterrupted version of the big tune as sung by the great Whitney Houston.

Fans of Whitney Houston will go for this light hearted drama.

Overlong remake of THE BISHOP'S WIFE is certainly no threat to the fond memories of the original film.

Angel comes to earth to help a preacher but ends up falling in love with his wife. Whitney Houston sings a bunch of songs but that's the only entertaining material in this drama.

Reminds me of a Medea movie and has most of the same actors, but without an actual Medea who would have bumped this up to be an actual funny comedy. Loretta Davis makes the most of her time here, and brings a few smiles. Good natured, beautifully shot, acceptably acted, but the story doesnt translate successfully from the original Cary Grant film - its slow and lackluster, but does hold a bit of magic despite the flaws. Even Denzel seems out of place here and rather cardboard tho that doesnt hold back the overall sweetness. Worth a look around Christmas on a slow afternoon.
