Critics Consensus

Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese lives up to its unwieldy title with a delightfully unorthodox look at a pivotal period in its subject's career.

It wouldn't take much work to make a case for Dylan as a criminally underrated vocal stylist based on these performances alone, approaching each new song as one more masterpiece he can't stop painting over. Go to Full Review

Martin Scorsese's masterful account of Bob Dylan's 1975 Rolling Thunder Revue contains predictable treasures, jolting surprises, and a mischievous sprinkle of untruths. Go to Full Review

It is a great marriage of artist(s) and repertoire, and might slip past some people as just another talking head music doc. It's actually far more sly than that. Go to Full Review

It isn’t a Martin Scorsese picture, as viewers would see on the credits, but a story being told by Dylan himself in his confusional state that meshes with the freewheeling form of the actual shows. Go to Full Review

The music is one thing, the persona another. I’ve never had much patience with the narrative of Unknowable Trickster Dylan, the shape-shifting enigma that defined a generation while making himself tantalizingly unknowable... Go to Full Review

Scorsese’s new concert documentary film is sometimes moving, sometimes powerful musically, and almost always an entertaining piece of filmmaking, if not a head-scratching one. Go to Full Review

JAMES 06/12/2019 Very compelling and entertaining. Joan Baez was a jewel among many. See more Bill K @BDKowalski Mar 7 Overly long and chaotic, this is for the fans of Dylan’s deep cuts. The bulk of the performance scenes appear to have come from the first show of the tour in Plymouth’s Memorial Hall, with its songs dispensed throughout the film without regard to the chronological order in which they were originally performed. It was interesting to observe the diversity of the horde of sycophants who seemed to constantly surround Dylan. Some of them seemed to be high on something or other. Occasionally the camera records their often inane comments, some of which are little more than incoherent babble. The Dylan classics are legendary as one would expect. However, I couldn’t find much entertainment in this train wreck of a documentary. See more stephen b @RT02381805 02/02/2025 As a documentary it's a little faulty. One director's footage being represented by a second director comes out a bit muddled. But the live music from this tour is so great it makes it still worth a watch. A full on concert movie would have been so much better. See more AO S @RT21902008 12/22/2024 You have to do ALOT of drugs to like this movie and the music. This Dylan guy comes across like a serious jerk and narcissist. Why is everyone kissing his ass? I know he was a great songwriter in the 60's but this is a bad hippy trip and a mess of a documentary. See more Sams K @RT65506530 08/30/2024 A must see, whether you are Bob Dylan fans or not, this is an amazing portrait of America during the 70s. Brilliant. See more Jason R @RT64813104 03/23/2023 All in all, a most peculiar film https://uberscaryblog.blogspot.com/2022/10/when-somebodys-wearing-mask-hes-gonna.html See more Read all reviews
