I loved the first half of this and thought that the second half got completely insane in a way I did not appreciate.

There are lots of very obvious plot points, that you know where everything is going to play out, but you kind of go along with it because we're comfortable seeing her in this role.

Here's the quickie review: Good cast, nearly hopeless script.

School = bad. Guts = good. Ugh.

A truly terrible Working Girl knock-off...

The film feels as finely tailored to J. Lo as the booty-enhancing pencil skirts she wears throughout the movie: Second Act's Maya from Queens is our Jenny from the Block.

So much of the humor and so many of the situations in "Second Act" feel like warmed-over Second Helpings of a dinner from long ago. A dinner that wasn't all that memorable in the first place.
December 21, 2018
Even the boundless charms of Jennifer Lopez cannot overcome a mess of a script in Second Act.

Eating a wad of raw cookie dough is satisfying, but it might also make you sick. That's how "Second Act" is.

When the contrivances get too much in this 'Working Girl' for millennials, just watch take-charge, live-wire Jenny from the block deliver miles of smiles. Sometimes star power is its own reward.
December 20, 2018
The movie is all over the place and there is no attempt to weave it into a coherent whole - which is regrettable as scene for scene it often works.

It's a pleasant enough diversion, helped along immensely by Lopez's warm screen presence and by a first-rate Sassy Best Friend performance by Leah Remini.
December 20, 2018
The movie frankly feels like three stories in one -- without fully servicing any of them -- but skates by, barely, on the strength of Lopez's charm and some amusing supporting players.

If only the world saw street smarts as equal to book smarts, Maya wishes on her birthday. It's a nice idea, but Second Act doesn't possess smarts in either category.
December 20, 2018
Through each storyline pivot, the focus is lost, and it never reclaims any footing it may have had in the first place.
December 20, 2018
Second Act never recovers from its big reveal, a cataclysmic (and nearly catastrophic) piece of narrative nuttiness that derails every scene, every performance, every subsequent revelation.
Top Critic
December 20, 2018
Second Act has nothing to recommend it, even as a temporary refuge from traffic gridlock.
December 20, 2018
To its credit, it remains fairly watchable even as it veers around wildly in tone. Yet Second Act also proves that all-in-one products have their downsides.
December 20, 2018
Lopez still has her magic touch, but this semiromantic comedy doesn't do her justice.
December 20, 2018
It's clear this movie is for a certain audience, but at least the film embraces its genre and the jokes stick the landing.
