Solace (2016)

Critic Consensus: Solace boasts a talented cast and a somewhat intriguing premise, but they're outweighed by a plodding story that teeters between tired clichés and ludicrous twists.

Movie Info

When FBI Special Agent Joe Merriwether (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) is unable to solve a series of homicides, he decides to enlist the help of his former colleague Dr. John Clancy (Anthony Hopkins), a retired physician with psychic powers. The reclusive Clancy, who shuttered his practice and retreated from the world following the death of his daughter and subsequent break-up of his marriage, wants nothing to do with the case. He soon changes his mind after seeing disturbingly violent visions of Joe's partner, FBI Special Agent Katherine Cowles's (Abbie Cornish) ultimate demise. When Clancy's exceptional intuitive powers put him on the trail of a suspect, Charles Ambrose (Colin Farrell), the doctor soon realizes his abilities are no match against the extraordinary powers of this vicious murderer on a mission.

Critic Reviews for Solace

Solace isn't a Silence of the Lambs sequel in which Hopkins gets to reprise the role of Hannibal Lecter. But he comes pretty damn close in this ludicrous murder mystery, which is stuck somewhere between a bad season of Dexter and a dated crime flick.

The directorial pyrotechnics keep Solace from "dragging" in a narrative sense; the very real boredom it nonetheless elicits is more existential.

Staggeringly silly and visually disordered, this unfortunate misfire has been kicking around Europe and elsewhere for a couple of years under different titles, and it's easy to see why.

As leftovers go, "Solace" retains a fair amount of flavor, thanks to high-end ingredients.

This paranormal cops-versus-serial-killer procedural is never not ridiculous, but it's often entertaining as well ...

An overly convoluted tale drowned in creepy but essentially meaningless violent images and dry performances.

Audience Reviews for Solace

Not half as clever as it thinks it is. Not half as bad as it's purported to be. I'm glad that this never became EI8HT though. It struggled enough to work as a standalone tale, I don't really see it working as a SE7EN sequel.

A little bit of a homage to Silence Of The Lambs as a psychic begrudgingly agrees to go after a serial killer. There's even a scene where Hopkins deconstructs a FBI agent, reading her the riot act, just like in Silence. The best scene is when Hopkins faces Farrell, two gunslinger slinging.

I'm glad audiences got this and not critics, I hope rotten tomatoes steers away from critics someday. This is one crazy journey and throws twist after twist. I had thought the ending was going to let me down but happy to say it was good. The acting is top notch and the directing is on the money, my only issue was the pacing which lagged at times. The story needed an extra 15 mins to flush the characters and don't watch the trailer as it ruins Farrells arrival which is brilliant. They really should've kept him secret much like Kevin Spacey in Seven.
