The Little Mermaid Reviews

Disney's 'The Little Mermaid' is a wonderful undersea adventure that ironically spends a big part of its film on land. Nevertheless, the plot is very cute and the film has some creative characters especially with their main villain Ursula who is truly terrifying. The one flaw in this film is Ariel falling head over heels for the first man she's seen from land based on looks alone, but the movie is still very charming and its a recommended watch.

One of Disney's most iconic, charming and fun stories! A light-hearted spin of the Hans Christian Andersen tale, but packed with action, emotion, tension and some scary scenes for children. The animation, soundtrack, characters and story are among the best! No wonder it started a new trend of success with Disney and in the animation industry!

The Little Mermaid was a landmark film in several ways. It was the Disney Studio's first major smash since The Rescuers was released more than a decade earlier, and pulled the studio decisively out of a slump they had been struggling to get out of since Walt Disney's death in 1966. It was the film that "brought Broadway to animation," introducing a more Broadway-influenced style of songwriting and performance than had been seen in Disney features up to that point. It was the film that kicked off the 10 year "Disney Renaissance," in which the studio would release smash hit after smash. And in some ways, it was the last of the "old-school" Disney animated films. For starters it was the last Disney animated film to utilize hand-painted cels, and the first to introduce the CAPS system of digital coloration, rendering cels and the animation camera obsolete. But it was also the last Disney movie to really "feel" like the classic Disney movies like Peter Pan and Cinderella. The animation in the films that followed in "Mermaid's" wake would have a more spectacular and exaggerated style than the more realistic animation found in "Mermaid" and its predecessors. Likewise. the dialogue and voice acting would no longer sound as natural and conversational as it once was. As such, The Little Mermaid, like The Rescuers before it, was both the end of an era and the start of a new one. The film itself, of course, is a classic. The characters are genuine, the animation is top-notch, and many of the songs (despite containing some 80s-era synth that hasn't quite aged well) are among the most cherished and renowned in the Disney canon. But it's also that slight feeling of nostalgia, the fact that it was the last time that a Disney movie would ever really "feel" this way, that also makes the film such a poignant one.

A few issues we’ll keep under the sea aside, this is a classic masterpiece, you’ll want to be where this movie’s playing, want to see it from start to finish.

The cynical eye sees a movie and asks "what in the world are we teaching our children?" Yet, if we stay focused on Disney's artistry and the all-in joyfulness with which The Little Mermaid was made, the true message becomes clear: each of us has the ability to make our own dreams come true.

Even though it has some pretty questionable morals, The Little Mermaid is still a magnificent animated movie. It has catchy songs, an awesome villain, and beautiful animation that you would expect from the great animation empire that is Disney.
