Under the Silver Lake hits its stride slightly more often than it stumbles, but it's hard not to admire - or be drawn in by - writer-director David Robert Mitchell's ambition. Read critic reviews

Oct 02, 2019"Our world is filled with codes." An enigma rapped in a riddle full of bullsh**, Under the Silver Lake is a pointless film about nothing. When a new tenant from his apartment complex mysteriously goes missing Sam investigates her disappearance and happens upon a bizarre secret society by unraveling a series of hidden clues. Featuring Andrew Garfield, Riley Keough, and Topher Grace, the film has a pretty solid cast. But the writing is piss-pour; the mysteries and riddles don't make any sense, the resolution couldn't be more unsatisfying, and most of the characters don't even have names. But the film looks gorgeous and has a surrealist, film noir feel. Incredibly disappointing, Under the Silver Lake is insultingly stupid with a plot that goes nowhere.Dann M Super Reviewer

Aug 13, 2019The movie has flavors of Lynch and Hitchcock but ultimately this is a different beast. Yes the main character (Garfield, giving a fantastic performance) is unstable, insufferable and a misogynist. Yes the labyrinthine plot is goes nowhere. That is the point. There's no mystery to unravel here, and I like that. Its unsubtle criticism of the audience, but it is effective.Alec B Super Reviewer

Jan 20, 2019Relatable? Hell no. But a little bit of weirdness helps the medicine go down and Under the Silver Lake is a fine sort of movie to just let happen. The performances are decent, and sure, there's a lot of wank happening here, but some originality too, and that goes a long way.Gimly M Super Reviewer
