Rose K @RT05965905 Apr 9 I brought three three-yr olds to this little film with the highest of hopes. They were already obsessed with watermelons having watched the trailer multiple times. We watched it at our local IMAX theatre. The time lapse photography showing the watermelons growing was really nice and went on for long enough that it was very satisfying. The film’s setting was lovely: a small garden farm run by a sweet family who then sell their produce at their popular vegetable stand. The ending was sweet, with the family sitting ant an ethereal picnic table together laughing and enjoying the beautiful watermelon they grew. Two main criticisms. This movie continued the popular trend of bratty children being put on pedestals. The lead girl prances around the working farm in a pink dress with a “magic” wand playing pranks on her family members, like her hard working papa who is just trying to get his tractor working as he mops she sweat from his brow. Poor little darling is coddled when her plastic wand gets crushed by the tractor wheel. No sense of her appreciation of her family’s work or involvement in it till on a whim she decides to take over the watermelon growing. She knows best, of course, and pushes her mother out of the way to do it herself. The other criticism is the sensory assault that this film inflicts. The soundtrack is blaring, at times with simply awful music. The constant choppy action made me feel like I was watching a bad claymation. It actually gave me a headache. I had to look away from the screen at times. It seemed so unnecessary. The setting was so beautiful. Why not show the gorgeous skies and moving sun and everything else in a nice peaceful natural way rather than the robotic stop go stop go that sapped the beauty out of this little film. A telling part of this experience was that the three children I was with said nothing at all about the film afterwards. We had previously seen IMAX films about beavers and penguins which they chatted about endlessly afterwards and really made an impression on them. This watermelon one was a thing to be endured and forgotten. See more 04/22/2014 I'm 46 and my son is 4. We were both blown away by this wonderful story of a child growing watermelons on her family farm. From the time lapse imagery to the soundtrack to the captured beauty of nature to the lessons and symbolism...I'm not sure which pleased me most. When it ended, my son said, "I want to watch it again." I agreed. I also loved the diversity of the customers at the market. Def can't wait to add to my DVD collection once it becomes available.
