What to Know

Critics Consensus

Even with Domhnall Gleeson and Andrea Riseborough bringing conviction to these star-crossed characters, Alice & Jack strains audience sympathy too much for love to be enough.

Alice & Jack is a tedious romance that isn’t very romantic. Go to Full Review

It might all make more sense if Riseborough and Gleeson had more spark between them. But their parts are under-written, anyway, so that neither character has much dimension or motivation. Go to Full Review
Nick Schager The Daily Beast 03/17/2024
Asks the excellent Andrea Riseborough and Domhnall Gleeson to sell a variety of plot points that strain credibility to preposterous lengths. Despite a few genuinely touching moments, it’s far too daft to enchant. Go to Full Review

The problem is you never believe in Alice and Jack’s mutual fascination – she’s unpredictable, he’s a passive-aggressive nerd, they have no chemistry. Go to Full Review
James Croot The Post NZ 04/14/2024
Gleeson and Riseborough’s duo might not exactly be compatible – or combustible – but there’s a palpable chemistry and easy banter that hooks you in and makes you want to see where they’ll end up, even if together might be the worst option for both. Go to Full Review

Alice & Jack sometimes feels like one of the most interesting love stories we’ve seen in ages, and at others it’s infuriatingly annoying. But Gleeson and Riseborough have undeniable chemistry... Go to Full Review

andyth55 @AndyTh55 Feb 23 For me, the basis of a good drama is to feel you are living the characters and feel their pain, but Alice & Jack are too dislikeable to have any empathy with, so each emotion they portray feels completely detached. This and the implausible plot make the whole thing a flat disappointment. See more Emma P @Emmywemmy Jan 3 Let's face it, with the total crap they put out as entertainment it's hard to find anything worth your attention to watch that isn't wholly political or absolute depressing nonsense ie every soap and ps they used to be great in the days of the formidable Viv and Bob Hope, love you Deena Payne! This is a watch, it's a tad yuppy for my personal taste, I think as many have said that Alice is very cold and unlikable but that is the point, she's messed up as a result of sexual abuse so can pretty much only function in a money making way. You genuinely get people like Alice and like Jack, although I think it gets unrealistic in terms of the sheer amount of shite he puts up with from her, in fairness, it wasn't the worst, something's off about it and I think it's the yuppiness. It's a thin soup but as I said, it's a watch. Jack's death and the way her dad croaks it's unrealistic but it's ok. The take away is that people are complicated in ways we should be simple, but it's lacking for me. See more Dave L Jul 14 This series is different from all the rest , put simply..... It's brilliant !!! (ENGLISH) Some loves are not beautiful, healthy, or easy to understand. This series dives headfirst into one of those. From the very beginning, it throws you into a relationship that hurts, that confuses, and that, more than once, makes you wonder why on earth these two are still together. But that's the point: it's not a story meant to justify love, but to show it in its rawest and most chaotic form. Andrea Riseborough and Domhnall Gleeson carry the entire weight of the show, and it must be said—they do it well. She is Alice, a woman who always seems to have an impenetrable wall around her. Cold, distant, and sometimes even cruel. He is Jack, a man who seems to live in a constant state of hope, as if believing that, with enough patience, Alice will eventually open up. But what if she never does? That tension keeps the series afloat, though at times it also makes it hard to watch. Their dynamic swings like a pendulum—intense, exhausting, and at times, frustrating. There are moments when you just want to scream at Jack to give up, but you also understand why he doesn’t. After all, love isn’t always rational. The script has its ups and downs. When it works, it captures the essence of a complicated love, with dialogues that hit home and scenes that leave you breathless. But there are also times when it gets lost in its own attempt to be profound, falling into clichés or situations that feel forced. And while the background music tries to add emotion, it eventually becomes repetitive, as if the series relies too much on it to convey what words fail to express. One of the show’s strongest points is Aisling Bea, who shines in her supporting role. Her character provides a much-needed breath of fresh air, with a natural charm that contrasts with the intensity of the leads. In fact, more than once, you may find yourself wishing the story shifted towards her, as she seems to have much more to offer. In short, this is a series that hooks you, but not always for the right reasons. It’s a raw and, at times, frustrating portrayal of a relationship that hurts more than it heals. It’s not for everyone, but if you're willing to dive into its shadows, you might find something that makes you reflect on love and its many forms.
