What to Know

Critics Consensus

With a promising premise, handsome locations, and a well-known character, The Lost Symbol has all the pieces necessary to be an addictive addition to Robert Langdon's story - if only the show's flat writing and strange pace didn't undermine all that potential.

"The Lost Symbol" feels like something you'd watch on Saturday morning cable when the remote is lost, though Peacock might be hoping to secure fans of the "Librarians" franchise, too. Go to Full Review

You have a show of very handsomely designed interiors - museums, galleries, Masonic temples and whatnot - and then actors squinting and explaining. No matter how outlandish the topic of the discussions, there isn't enough oxygen in the room to sustain. Go to Full Review

By now we all know what to expect from Dan Brown offerings (i.e. relentless iconography and historical references, a healthy dose of danger, and some seriously ominous bad guys) -- this series delivers on that promise. Go to Full Review

A surprisingly welcome reboot of a franchise that seemed to have already been tidily wrapped up. Go to Full Review

Despite a fractured narrative... events move at a fair clip, an engaging, easy mix of puzzle-solving and danger dodging. Go to Full Review

It quickly plummets into your bog-standard, formulaic Dan Brown storyline in which Langdon is a helpless prisoner of a contrived, all-constraining plot. Go to Full Review

See more John L 06/18/2024 Fills the gap in the three feature films adapted from Brown's novels. It was originally intended to be the third feature film, but was shelved to make Inferno. Having seen the series, I'm wishing it had been made as the third or fourth feature film with Tom Hanks as Langdon. As with many U.S. TV mini-series it suffers from pacing, dialog and some of its acting talent. Ashley Zukerman was not a good choice for Robert Langdon, which is sad for the principal lead role. His performance was stiff and stilted. Valorie Curry was OK as Katherine Solomon, as were most of other principals. By contrast, the three feature films are tautly executed with excellent pacing. Production Design with sets, props and costuming is much better than most TV productions. The novel is quite good and sold exceptionally well. This adaptation deviates considerably from the novel retaining not much beyond principal characters and its concept. It's bloated with an extreme romantic tension between Langdon and Solomon's daughter, Katherine, taking numerous lengthy detours into their relationship that are unnecessary to the plot. It could have been made in half the runtime, but as with most TV mini-series, it needed to fill ten ~45 minute episodes. Pacing varies wildly as it needs to arrive at suspense point at the end of each episode to hook the viewer into wanting to see the next one. Another flaw in most TV mini-series. In conclusion, it would have been much better if made as a feature film similar to the other three adaptations, and not a TV mini-series. See more Read all reviews
