Ray Barone is a successful sports writer and family man who deals with a brother and parents -- who happen to live across the street. Mom Marie loves to meddle in his life, while older brother Robert sometimes resents his success, and Dad Frank just makes comments and raids the fridge. Nevertheless, Ray manages to keep a bright outlook and a sense of humor, leaving the hard issues to his more-practical wife, Debra.

There's plenty to Love in this witty riff on the push and pull of family, from Ray Romano's self-deprecating comedy to the sterling roster of supporting players.

Mr. Romano has a knack for hilariously obsessing on life's most ordinary details. He's made for prime-time comedy, and Everybody Loves Raymond would seem to be his perfect vehicle. Go to Full Review

I'm in the minority among critics, but I can't see America falling in love with such a mildly amusing show unless it travels to a cushier time slot. Go to Full Review

Liking these folks is a given. They're real and hysterically flawed, a frazzled TV family that doesn't have to turn on the syrup to show it cares. Go to Full Review

Emerson H. @movielover9 Feb 11 So this isn’t usually the type of thing I would review here, but this year ( 2026) , I am attempting to log in every ( reasonable), tv show season , movie or special that I watch, so here we go! The first season of Everybody Loves Raymond while having a lot of jokes and bits that don’t land and story beats that fall flat, it manages to be actually very delightful and entertaining, 7/10 See more AnActor E @RT16798608 02/10/2025 Despite being innately hit or miss, the goals of comedy are always the same: to relieve, amuse or inspire. In theory, a good comedy is capable of achieving all three, but the brutal truth is that funny often ends in a broken nose. Following the unspoken rules of the American Sitcom, this family friendly suburban recounting is, unfortunately, mostly a miss. It’s hard enough to get an audience to laugh at standup; add to that the laundry list of daytime programming’s content restrictions and you get a very limited playing field. Regardless, “Everybody Loves Raymond” is considered one of the most successful sitcoms of all time. It was received with high viewership and unending praise during its nine seasons, and is ranked among the funniest comedies to release on television. This is because, in the words of one of my acting teachers, “America does not want to come home to Medea”. Most Americans need to relax after a hard day’s work, and Romano’s peaceful setting, coupled with its lighthearted subject matter make for an easygoing sit on the sofa. The wider the net in terms of audience, the more careful the comedian must be with his content. This is where the writers excel in this series: Raymond’s true appeal is in tackling family matters with mirth and optimism. The next best thing to funny is cute, and Raymond’s cast excels at captivating its audience. Who are these quirky people? What common day conflict will crop up next? Will this family face issues we are currently experiencing? Everybody Loves Raymond is like a tall, refreshing glass of iced tea in that it keeps a fresh charm about it. By addressing everyday conflicts, this show is able to offer a degree of amusement, understanding and consolation like a vicarious support group, theoretically achieving all three goals of a proper comedy… if only they’d tone it down with all the kissing couples! Sheesh!! See more Keith B B @Okbullard 11/04/2023 This was one of my all time favorite comedies. What's interesting is the only main character I'd ever seen before in this show was Peter Boyle yet they were all excellent!! The writing was amazing, the timing was succinct and the laughs were plentiful. For BM 6 months ago reviewer you can't compare this to Tool Time; most of that was based on Allen's stand-up routines. It's definitely worth the watch. See more andre l @ROTTENCORPSE 01/06/2023 Fantastic sitcom that tackles everyday situations and relatable events. It's real everyday man writing is great, watching these families saying and doing things that you actually can relate to in real life is refreshing to see. Unfortunately they no longer make shows like this, everything now is divisive, promotes victimhood, and racial politics. We need more good shows like this.
