MAHESH D @docherla Oct 6 Based on a novel, which I have never read, this could have had huge potential. The twists & the surprises and the ending were truly good. The issue is with the screenplay, editing, casting as well as huge loopholes in the story and the investigation path. Even for the Indian police, the screenplay ends portraying them as dumb fools, who repeatedly keep missing the forest for the trees despite being IPS with 6 to 10 yrs experience. The only good out of this whole story is to watch the acting chops of the actors playing the couple Gabbi & Pushkar. They were really good. And, if there is any character played by Pawan Malhotra, you can always be assured, that the character is very important to the story. Frankly, the series fails as a thriller completely while entertains as a love story & gives a sober ending in the final episode, presenting a very nuanced view of events based on history. I could have easily rated it a 3/5 but cut down due to all the glaring loopholes and the poor casting and acting of the one character around whom all the episodes revolve. See more Hemant S @RT50421404 05/01/2023 A story based on a sensitive period in India during 1984 – the events that led to the assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and the riots that followed, "Grahan" is based on Satya Vyas's 2018 novel, "Chaurasi". With that kept in mind, the story has been handled with adequate fragility and in some ways, is a reminder that even today, politics is still agenda driven and can be destructive towards the very people that it must function for. The story flows through two different timelines – one in the past, the ‘80s and the other in the protagonist, Amrita Singh's present day – 2016. A senior cop in Ranchi, Amrita Singh runs into the murky waters of political intervention as she investigates the murder of an investigative journalist. Frustrated with the bureaucracy, and torn between her job and a long distance relationship, she presents her resignation. Her boss, in response assigns her to a task force investigating the age old, still unresolved case of the riots of '84 in Bokaro. Meanwhile in ‘84, Rishi, a youth in the city of Bokaro tries to find a job and experiences the tensions driven by the Khalistan movement and the after waves of Operation Blue Star. In his quest to settle in the city and find his feet, Rishi finds a bright ray of hope with a romance that blooms, even as the dark clouds of doom gather. Meanwhile in the present, as Amrita gets acquainted with the case with the help of a righteous deputy, she encounters some evidence that shakes the foundations of her own home and family. The tales of the past and the present are seamlessly intertwined with some great writing by Shailendra Jha and his team, and direction by Ranjan Chandel. Zoya Hussain, Pawan Malhotra, Wamiqa Gabbi and Anshuman Pushkar are excellent as the leads. Anshuman in particular, is a revelation – someone to watch out for. Sahidur Rahaman in his supporting role, shines quite bright as well. Amit Trivedi's music wraps around the story giving it the sweet melodies and the dark tone it calls for. At the expense of sounding cheesy, I have to say it's been a while since I've seen good, old fashioned romance being portrayed with innocent subtlety sans exaggeration – the love story embedded in '84 is exactly that. A sensitive story that will send some ripples, presented with justified grit. See more Read all reviews
