High School Musical: The Musical: The Series
Though fans may find what they've been looking for in its nostalgic stylings, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series follows a little too closely in its predecessors steps to truly be the start of something new.

There's tension amid the cast and Miss Jenn needs to get their heads in the game.

After Nini discovers that E.J. isn't who she thinks he is, Ashlyn gets caught in the middle. Gina and E.J. team up as "wonderstudies," and Ricky gets an unexpected visitor at home.
Miss Jenn organizes a girl's night out with Kourtney and Nini to help Nini shake off the boy drama, while the rest of the theater kids attend the East High Homecoming dance, where Carlos learns to dance like everyone's watching.
When Miss Jenn is placed on temporary leave and rehearsals are put on hold, the students rally together to defend their drama teacher.
A rambunctious Thanksgiving "cast party" at Ashlyn's ends with surprising news for Gina, while Miss Jenn and Mr. Mazzara accidentally spend the holiday together at East High.
When the cast and crew unexpectedly need to find a new location to "tech" their production, Carlos secures a spooky theater downtown, forcing Miss Jenn to confront old demons.
After months of rehearsals, the theater kids gear up for an unforgettable opening night. But when unexpected audience members show up to shake the cast to its core, will the show "go on" if the Wildcats aren't all in this together?
It's Act Two of opening night, and the stakes have never been higher. After last-minute cast changes in Act One - and so much left unsaid between Ricky and Nini - there's more drama offstage than on.

Does that make sense? It shouldn't. But for those over and under 12 who enjoyed the earnest, silly pleasantness of HSM, this might just hit the spot.
It's sweet and funny and charming, and God bless Disney for being the world's most efficient factory at churning out cherubic teenagers who can sing the house down.
The dialogue and characters here are so grating that it's one minor rewrite away from a Scary Movie-style parody of High School Musical instead.
It even left me wanting to watch the second season. Considering I haven't seen any of the movies, this should be considered a miracle! [Full review in Spanish]
Very well cast with catchy tunes. Some of the plotting could be better but overall I enjoyed it
While there are some tongue-in-cheek gags, this restaging of the story of Gabriella and Troy, featuring the ear-splitting singing Disney musicals go in for, plays it straight. As saccharine as it gets.
Even the title has a bit of the sharp and irreverent self-awareness that the original lacked. It never takes itself too seriously, even when it probably should.
While High School Musical may not seem like the freshest material, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series feels new, exciting, and stuffed with fun.
The new series has songs - ones that aren't retreads - and a sense of competition that's brutal.
High School Musical: The Musical: The Series might take place in the same high school and be a musical about the musical, but its characters have their own unique issues and personalities.
I'm honestly looking forward to watching the rest of the series and would definitely recommend original HSM fans give this show a shot.
High School Musical: The Musical: The Series captures a sense of what endeared Disney Channel shows to them in the first place, but overcomes tropes and clichés for a more grown-up approach.

Dec 12, 2020I prefer the original 3 Movies than this sh** Series, it looks so cringey and there's a gay character, so much cringe
-
Nov 23, 2020The three movies are part of my childhood and when they announced a series I felt that they were going to break with what high school music was at the time. After having seen the series I can conclude that it exceeded all my expectations and it is a series with great actors, great songs and a great (but short) tribute to the first movie. The performances of both Olivia acting as Nini and Joshua as Ricky are great, I felt a lot of similarity with Gabriella and Troy while the other actors bring great stories of their own to the series.

Oct 11, 2020Ricky is so handsome and danggggg, his shoes are so cute. That's all that needs to be said.
-
Jul 25, 2020High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is a strange High School Musical/The Office hybrid that may give a fresh perspective for the new target demographic. But it won't be able to recreate the level of sentiment that of it's predecessor.

Jun 24, 2020When I first heard about this show, I expected to hate it and I know I was not alone. However, the new songs (as well as the remakes of the old ones) and characters had me in love from the beginning. The characters were extremely well cast and the cast themselves are unbelievably talented. I can't wait for season 2. Would 100% recommend for everyone!!

May 28, 2020So I'd never seen the original High School Musical all the way through until recently (quarantine makes you do weird things in search of comfort), so I'm not an OG diehard fan, but I actually really enjoyed this. I don't even think it's the lockdown talking. The kids all have great chemistry with each other and the script is funny, meta, and fully self effacing. Some of the new songs were so good I even listened to them on Spotify. The adults are all a bit weird (except the robotics teacher, I liked him), the parents are way to self involved and oblivious to be realistic and Ms Jenn... is a lot. She's too over the top and she's definitely not 31... sorry hun. You don't need to be but then the script shouldn't say you are... There's also no way in hell a teacher is allowed to teach after they find out they don't actually have any formal education. But if you can suspend your disbelief, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is fresh and fun even if you're outside the Disney+ demographic.

Apr 20, 2020As someone who grew up obsessed with the original movies, I don't think I was alone in expecting to hate this. I was SHOCKED to find myself hooked after the first episode. It's cute, fun, and has good music. I think it does a good job of honoring the original films without trying to be a continuation, and that was my biggest fear going in to it. I definitely would recommend for a fun and easy watch.

Apr 01, 2020Diehard fan of original franchise. Season 1 of HSMTMTS is a fun, meta, fresh spinoff of the original. Surprising myself to say...Absolute must-see if you were a fan of the original HSM or the tv show Glee. And even if you weren't, I'm confident you'd still enjoy it. Original songs are brilliant as are the covers of HSM songs. Well done, Disney+!

Mar 26, 2020BEST SHOW CAN WAIT FOR SEASON TWO
-
Mar 20, 2020The acting in this wasn't very good and the plot felt choppy. I wasn't a fan of the characters and while I love theater and musical theater I didn't connect with the show.
